Bees are a somewhat common subject for me. They are a regular commission request. I usually only do one a year or so. I mostly do make them because eventually the materials come into my life and I want to put those castoff objects to good use. Alberto Giacometti left us with his reductionist view of humanity. 65 years later in this period of relentless expansion and gratuitous consumption….What are we now? There’s an irony baked into his depiction because a Walking Man sculpture sold for over $104 million USD in 2010 to a private collector… Can you think of a better use of these resources? ….Is that dark skeletal representation of humanity even more poignant today? Perhaps in a different form? As an absurdist thought experiment can we expand on his reduction? Are we so ravenous that we devour our host and each other in the process? Will mankind’s greatest artistic creations be just perches for birds to shit on after we have done ourselves in?
