If I could convince you to buy the book with 3 spreads I’d choose these! šŸ‘€šŸ“– This is my last post today andI want to share some close ups of my favourite illustrations and spreads! 🌟 My favourite spreads are: 🩱🩳The one about The Audition and the exercise which lets you recreate your own pool artwork 🌓The one about Hawksbill bay and the exercise which gets you to think about the emotions behind colours šŸ”Ž The one about creating your own sketchbook and exploring your local areas A lot of painting and creating is observing the world around you, and how you feel and experience these spaces! This book helps children and adults alike to not only create like Anderson but to think like him and many other painters who explore similar topics šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ If you’re interested in getting the book or any in the series they’re available at @tateshops online and in-person Thanks for joining me today! #tate #artbooks #picturebooks #artforchildren

Part 2: let’s get into the cover! šŸ“—šŸŽØšŸŒ³ If you didn’t see my first post of the day my name is Aisha, I am the illustrator behind ā€˜meet the artist: Hurvin Anderson’ and I’m taking over today and this time I’ll be talking about the making of the cover ~ There’s sooo much I could say on this, but firstly on the direction: it was a no brainer that there should be some element of trees or nature given the prominence of this subject in Hurvin’s work Secondly we wanted Hurvin doing something active, something that points to what you can expect to see in the book, so of course that was Hurvin painting! Overall the book was created with so many layers that often my iPad kept shutting down! šŸ¤’ The cover was no exception so a lot of flat colours were illustrated in Procreate and then the detail was made in separate files transferred to Photoshop where I could compile it all together like a collage. To create some of the texture you see on the video I painted various sheets of paper in different colours and styles so that I could scan this onto my computer and overlay all the flat details I created in procreate. Mixed media can be a lot of fun because it’s all experimentation and there’s so many different ways to fit it all together, like a jigsaw puzzle! 🧩 #ChildrensBooks #ArtForChildren #mixedmedia #Bookstagram #hurvinanderson

Hey, my name is Aisha šŸ‘‹šŸ¾ and I am the illustrator behind ā€˜Meet the Artist Hurvin Anderson: an art activity book’ I am taking over Tate Publishing’s instagram page to share a little bit about me and some behind the scenes of how the book was made! Some fun facts about me: 🌟I’ve been a freelance illustrator for around 3 years now consistently 🌟I started drawing while studying for my post-graduate degree in Town Planning 🌟I’ve been a Town Planner for around 5 years 🌟My favourite things to draw are landscapes and plants Bonus fun fact šŸ‘€: My favourite painting of Hurvin Anderson’s featured in the book is…’Audition’ (the scene of the swimming pool) 🌊 And another bonus bonus fun fact šŸ‘€šŸ‘€: I finished the book in about 7 months! In the next few posts and on Tate Publishings stories I’ll go more into the cover and how the book was made. If you know Hurvin Anderson’s paintings you’ll know how much vibrancy and texture his paintings have, so with this book it was important to capture some of his classic artistic style in the illustrations. The book itself teaches you how to open up your artistic expression (which isn’t just for kids) and in-fact I used some of the techniques myself when creating this book (check out slide 5). Anyway if you have any questions at all ask away and I’ll answer šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ #ChildrensBooksĀ #PictureBooksĀ #ArtForChildrenĀ #TatePublishingĀ #bookstagram

Finally, I’ll share some of my favourite spreads from the book. This first one is a puzzle, I used to LOVE doing these! Help Whistler get to lesson on time! Slide 2 is an observational drawing activity, something I think should be doing more of myself. Thank you for having me @tatepublishing - it’s been a pleasure! Bye Bye! Meet the Artist: James McNeill Whistler out 19th May!

THE COVER: One of the pages in the book refers to how Whistler would create his paintings like a musician: ā€˜composition first, meaning how the light, colour and shape in his paintings all work together to create something beautiful – like a song!’ Which is why I turned the ripples from his rowing boat into sheet music. I wanted to capture the nature of Whistler in a playful way. He used to take a rowing boat out on the river to get inspiration, so that was my starting point. Here’s a photo I took a few years ago of the river in my hometown as a reference and an early sketch of the cover. I’m always listening to music when I work and I think it really affects how the illustration looks. Mood and feeling is really important to me in a painting or illustration so I’m always playing around with light and texture to reflect that.
