Hey, my name is Aisha šš¾ and I am the illustrator behind āMeet the Artist Hurvin Anderson: an art activity bookā
I am taking over Tate Publishingās instagram page to share a little bit about me and some behind the scenes of how the book was made!
Some fun facts about me:
šIāve been a freelance illustrator for around 3 years now consistently
šI started drawing while studying for my post-graduate degree in Town Planning
šIāve been a Town Planner for around 5 years
šMy favourite things to draw are landscapes and plants
Bonus fun fact š: My favourite painting of Hurvin Andersonās featured in the book isā¦āAuditionā (the scene of the swimming pool) š
And another bonus bonus fun fact šš: I finished the book in about 7 months!
In the next few posts and on Tate Publishings stories Iāll go more into the cover and how the book was made. If you know Hurvin Andersonās paintings youāll know how much vibrancy and texture his paintings have, so with this book it was important to capture some of his classic artistic style in the illustrations.
The book itself teaches you how to open up your artistic expression (which isnāt just for kids) and in-fact I used some of the techniques myself when creating this book (check out slide 5). Anyway if you have any questions at all ask away and Iāll answer šš¾

Finally, Iāll share some of my favourite spreads from the book. This first one is a puzzle, I used to LOVE doing these! Help Whistler get to lesson on time!
Slide 2 is an observational drawing activity, something I think should be doing more of myself.
Thank you for having me @tatepublishing - itās been a pleasure! Bye Bye!
Meet the Artist: James McNeill Whistler out 19th May!
THE COVER:
One of the pages in the book refers to how Whistler would create his paintings like a musician: ācomposition first, meaning how the light, colour and shape in his paintings all work together to create something beautiful ā like a song!ā Which is why I turned the ripples from his rowing boat into sheet music.
I wanted to capture the nature of Whistler in a playful way. He used to take a rowing boat out on the river to get inspiration, so that was my starting point. Hereās a photo I took a few years ago of the river in my hometown as a reference and an early sketch of the cover.
Iām always listening to music when I work and I think it really affects how the illustration looks. Mood and feeling is really important to me in a painting or illustration so Iām always playing around with light and texture to reflect that.
Hello! My nameās Dide (@didetengiz ) Iām the illustrator behind Meet the Artist: James McNeill Whistler: An Art Activity Book!

This afternoon Iām going to share some behind the scenes of the artwork I made for the book ! Enjoy āŗļø
