• Feel your natural Pride • . Nature is showing us today what perseverance and enduring harsh conditions really mean — and how much the resilience we build up actually pays off in life. . The Ice Saints (every year from May 11–15) are making things extremely tough for wildlife this year. The mountains got 10–30 cm of fresh snow, the Lake of Constance is sitting at 10.5°C, and the air temperature feels somewhere between "holy crap, I'm freezing" and "someone please hand me a warm sweater." . "Cold Sophie" — the last of the Ice Saints — fell yesterday. The swan didn't seem bothered by any of that. Its expression was more like: "quit whining — you can see it's working just fine, keeping those eggs warm. You just have to want it badly enough." . The camera was cold. My hands were too. I took the shot anyway. The swan's quiet calm was just too hard to walk away from. I guess it was worth it. • Willi Siber • Exhibition • (The Nothingness is just as much as something) A new, fantastic exhibition in the city, with a completely new perspective on the space. Working together with the City of Konstanz and its Cultural Office, the Crescere Foundation Bodensee has truly managed to breathe an entirely new atmosphere into the venerable Richental Hall. . Large, stately, and space-defining — the hall now feels voluminous, having gained a new wall so that works of art can also be hung there. And with his large-scale, superbly crafted art, Willi Siber has managed to give the new setting a much more than just fitting opening. What an appearance ! . For most people, this combination really had a wow effect. A wonderful get-together with conversation and plenty of chance to exchange ideas and get talking. Anyone who missed the exhibition opening and wants to learn more about the art and its background can definitely make that up at one of the next special guided tours. . • Different • When the Nightsight reflects the Right Light • . In May, one party and many events seem to chase the others all the time, the day was long, and late in the evening you still go for a walk through the city to sort out your thoughts, calm your pulse, and let the day wind down to a groovy sound ... and then this: . You walk across Schänzle-Bridge, go past the City-Gym-Hall , down the winding stairs toward the Hall of Fame, and a strange light suddenly opens up before your eyes. The usually cool graffiti suddenly creates a completely different effect as the unnatural lights set different focus... Other music comes to mind instead of the rap music and hard beats that usually dominates within such scenes. . No question, the camera was instantly in hand, almost an inner compulsion to capture something of this new mood. . Maybe you feel the same way when looking at the photos. The Hall of Fame ... always an exciting place for encounters. Culture you can enjoy freely and carefree at any time. • Riva - The way to dive in Art • . When a five-star hotel, under the influence of a famous gallery, stages a vernissage in the lobby for its own guests, and the art extends all the way into the fine dining rooms, you can assume one thing — it’s going to be something special. And it was special. . The artist Christian Awe, who studied in the 2000s at the University of the Arts in Berlin under the supervision of Georg Baselitz and as a master student of Daniel Richter, found a new and very special approach to the element of water when a painting of his was accidentally destroyed by rain — as he explained himself at the vernissage. That is reflected in his new exhibition at the venerable Hotel Riva on the shore of Lake Constance in Konstanz. In that sense, the theme of water was very deliberately chosen for the ambiance of the house and its special atmosphere. . Anyone who wants to experience the effect of the large-scale works of art in the artist’s own shimmering, radiant colors for themselves can discover that during a stay at the hotel, or by visiting one of the two elegant in-house restaurants (Riva and @restaurant.ophelia ). . For now, all I have is the black-and-white version of the impressions from an impressive evening, which also offered up every star for stimulating the culinary senses. • Midwives who stand up, showing that they are taking it seriously • . Anyone who thought it would be a small event that would quickly disappear into obscurity was greatly mistaken. The midwives in Konstanz, especially the freelance attending midwives here, received an incredible response from the public when they called for a demonstration for better working conditions and fairer pay. On Tuesday, 05.05.2026, as part of International Midwives’ Day, they called on people to actively support their cause. . As the pictures clearly show, “the call was heard.” . More than 1,500 people gathered on Tuesday to answer the midwives’ “emergency call” for appropriate compensation for their work, in order to secure the profession for the long term. Especially in Konstanz, as a family-friendly city that records about 1,000 births each year at the hospital, and where that number is even rising contrary to the nationwide trend, protecting the profession is also an important factor for the city’s future. . It remains exciting, and it remains to be seen how the improvements to the midwives’ assistance contract, negotiated only recently in April, will affect practice and whether that will be enough to secure the freelance midwifery system and their self-determined, flexible, and family-oriented way of working. . • If you desperately need a tailor to alter something • . A plain Aldi Süd cloth bag is, on its own, really nothing special. But if it’s got empty beer bottles inside whose brand Aldi doesn’t even carry, then you might want to take a closer look at the person carrying the bag. . And? Yeah, you saw that right. There’s a lifeless fox dangling over the shoulder. But only as an empty shell of itself now. A hunting trophy in an urban setting, empty high society beer bottles in the low budget Aldi bag ... something about that just stands out. At least to me, something’s off and doesn't fit. . And when something doesn’t fit, and you yourself knows about it, where do you possibly go? Exactly, to the tailor. An alterations tailer might still be able to change something about it. . Though? I’m guessing it’s hopeless in this case, at least the fox looks pretty doomed. . And the carrier probably bears the empty returnables with equanimity and washes his hands and feet in innocence rather than guilt... good thing Konstanz is so small, and all the right shops for the story are within walking distance. . Thus the coffee-bar I'm sitting at is not only perfect to have one of the best espresso in town, but also for watching the theater performances that change daily. . • Reality versus concept (Why do we take photos, anyway?) . An exciting conversation between two contemporary photographers, Markus C. Hurek and Falk Baron Rausch von Traubenberg appeared in the new Leica Galerie Konstanz program to face some of the at times very challenging questions from Moderator Jörg Peter Rau . Both Photographers had been asked in advance to present eight Images that stood out from their overall body of work and to explain how those images came about. That alone is quite a challenge. (Just imagine you had to do so). . Intense explanations and viewpoints followed. Markus H., pointed out that the path to the image and the moment that isn’t obvious at first glance are what make it exciting. And it should be beautiful too. . Falk v.T. sees the key thing more in bringing an inner state into a visible form ... and, if needed, an emotional one too. For him, a photograph is a fragment of reality. . As moderator, Jörg R. was obviously intensely prepared, and he surprised everyone with a few master’s-thesis-level points ... In the moment the image is created, reality may already be something else .... The visual impression we get from a photo is matched against our reality within tenths of a second, and we sort it accordingly. So, he asks, what turns a good photo into a very good, and even into an exciting image? . Markus H.: 70% gut feeling ... whether it touches the moment, and whether there is a moment that won’t come again like that . Falk v.T.: if it touches the viewer on an emotional level. And of course the composition and the image structure. . It would blow up the frame to reproduce the hour and a half of the artists’ roundtable here. One thing did become clear, though. • Men against violence toward women • . What a day, what a statement, and what a signal that so many men - and women too - answered Marcus Göbeler’s initiative and call to take a clear stand as men against violence toward women, and to back it up not just with empty phrases, but with visible signs and actions. . SWR reported 300, the Südkurier has written about 250 people gathered ... Why downplay it, I’d honestly say there were far more people standing on Konstanz's Münsterplatz and crossed the city by a demonstrative walk and who took a stand on this. . Huge respect to the women who, visibly, had to summon every bit of strength to let such a large crowd in on their experiences of violence and abuse. A truly powerful moment that really got under your skin - I haven't seen anyone untouched - especially against the monumental backdrop and scenery of the cathedral. . A solid start, a signal in the right direction with the reach that’s absolutely necessary. I really hope it grows into something socially relevant, lasting, and able to win a majority not only in opinions. A movement that doesn’t just fizzle out. . Are you in with a positive vote? • Klimperquatschen No.19 Some call it pub talk, others describe it as a talk show… whichever way you look at it, one thing is clear: this conversation format has reached cult status on Konstanz's local scene, and thanks to its visuals it outshines any podcast - not just a little. The protagonists aren’t necessarily opposites, and they’re definitely authentically down-to-earth and always set up with that special kind of humor, that drives the audience highspeed through the evening. . In the 19th edition, the guests were Lisa Wiedemer (a "Försterin" who doesn’t shy away from any kind of high altitudes in the Black Forest) and Markus Zeiler (who, as the Mainau garden director, knows every mole on the Flower Island by its first name). . A captivating talk about nature, sustainability, and an early-childhood addiction to pine cones, hosted by the detail-wise, highly experienced Harald Kühl (affectionately dubbed “Kühli” by Marcel Beck, the innkeeper of the Klimperkasten) who’s never too proud for a little song. . Once more an awesome evening, an outstanding awesome atmosphere, and a line that will definitely stick: “Three pine trees for personal use are permitted.” Anyone who missed it, missed it. . • Body Lab • "In the Crosshairs of What’s Possible" . Monica Menez, the photographer who since 2003 has attracted attention not only through numerous awards in fashion photography and countless exhibitions in the photography world, can now be seen in Konstanz at the Leica Gallery with her remarkable exhibition “Body Lab.” . The opening (Vernissage) caused a stir right from the start, because she is one of the few female artists who not only openly acknowledges her intensely handeling of AI-generated photos, but also actively explains the topic in all its complexity and is willing to give detailed, deep going explanations. (No questions stayed unanswered that evening). . Thus her engagement with the subject of artificial intelligence in this exhibition is therefore a very deliberate choice - also in view of the fact that entire groups within the creative professions are being shaken. In her case, and within the exhibition, the topic has been given its own space which - I admit it - creates a certain wow effect. . Long story short: anyone who is interested in photography and its development should definitely not miss this exhibition, and should take a very close look. • Baustelle 17. • . Baustelle (Construction Site) — such is the plain, no-frills name of this exhibition series, which has set itself the task of making young art accessible to a wider audience in Konstanz and beyond. . The opening of the 17th Baustelle was once again a vernissage of a special kind, created by three female artists - Fiona Kaplan, Lucia Otto and Ida Kododji-Traore - all of whom began their artistic careers in the pre-study program at the art school in Meersburg. . Their themes are compelling, taking an in-depth look at the current forces shaping societies. Viewers find themselves drawn, almost involuntarily, into topics such as “cultural participation” and “distance and closeness.” In this way, different perspectives onto other worlds open up as if entirely naturally. Seen that way, for all visitors it was an intense dive into art - looking at it from different angles and with different intentions - much as Yala Spiegel did, who, with her particular eye as an art historian, explained the introduction to this diversity of themes. •How to make it to the top • If you think you've reached already right at the top, there’s always another floor unexpectedly added you still have to climb the top one. If you had studied the blueprints carefully beforehand, you’d know what to expect on the way up. That’s actually a pretty good way to sum up the 17th Entrepreneurs’ Breakfast. . It definitely wasn’t an elevator pitch. The nearly 400 entrepreneurs had plenty of time (7am - 10am) for networking and exchanging information. And of course there was exclusive information about the Asisi Panorama Konstanz from Managing Director Johannes Schweizer, updates on the development of the city of Konstanz from Lord Mayor Uli Burchardt, and then, of course, a detailed talk by the keynote speaker and futurologist Sven Gaborjansky on the topic “Predictable business through AI-supported strategic future thinking.” Exciting! . And anyone who still had the breath and stamina then climbed the tower’s 13 floors on foot to enjoy a spectacular view in absolutely glorious weather and discover new perspectives. (The elevator hasn’t been installed in the tower yet). .
