“How do you feel now that you’ve returned to where your dreams begin?” 🔮
This quote from ‘Double Talk’ (2018), presented by
@estherschippergallery at Loop Fair 2019, perfectly encapsulates the heart of Tao Hui’s body of work.
Born in Chongqing, China,
@taohui_ is fascinated by the unexpected encounters between seemingly opposing yet deeply intertwined concepts in our era: algorithmic life and social relationships, art and economy, politics and the entertainment industry.
Alongside his films ‘Excessive’ (2015) and ‘Double Talk’ (2018) being shown in the Loop Fair competition, Hui was also featured in an extensive talk with Marko Daniel (Director of the
@fundaciomiro , Barcelona) during Loop Fair 2019, and in the Loop Festival exhibition ‘Screen as Display Body’ at
@museupicasso in 2023. Daniel described him as an artist narrating our “multi-channel, mediated, image-based world.”
In this chapter of Spotlight On, Loop’s mini-interview series exploring artist films through the voices of the artists themselves, we asked Tao Hui to tell us more about his upcoming project, his relationship with moving images, and a recent image he just can’t get out of his head.
