World meet Glottosaurus! Glotto meaning “tongue” is the word I’ve used as the text for my kinetic sculpture. The letters for Tongue in English, ज़ुबान in Hindi and നാക്ക് Malayalam are spread across and turn imitating the way a tongue might articulate the sounds in a mouth. These are also three of the languages I balance as a speaker, reader and writer with varying levels of fluency. The type designer in me always wants to work with metal. I couldn’t cast type so here I am casting shadows with my metal type. The reptilian quality on its spine as it suspends brings the saurus. It’s on view at @xxl.gallery till February. Come by and see it move in person

बॉम्बे स्वीट शॉप : Script Adaptation Early in the lockdown I was working on small personal projects interpreting logos in Devnagri to keep my mind busy from all the uncertainties. Bombay Sweet Shop had opened earlier that year with a mazedaar logo that combined the best of old school indulgent maximalism very sleekly interpreted in an Art Deco style, proved a worthy challenge. The English logo had the words shaped in three separate boxes with varying sizes had me juggling with perspective and proportions for its Marathi counterpart. So when @pleaseseeus who had designed the delicious English logo reached out to use the Devanagari version I drew, I was over the moon! I cleaned it up a bit and the end result is a beautiful sign that lives outside the @bombaysweetshop Byculla shop. Shot by @aashim who makes all signs look lovelier. Empress Court: Signage Design ✨
Last year I got to be part of a special project that merged my love for signage and working with archival material. @artdecomumbai got me on board this project with a unique brief to restore the sign for Empress Court to its original design from 1936. Thanks to archival photographs courtesy of ADMT and meticulous planning and measurements from the team, I got to re-create the design that now over looks the Oval maidan. Empress Court is a prominent part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and I am thrilled to have played a small part in its typographic revival. Extremely delighted to have @aashim photograph this beauty in all its glory one fine “Bombay Winter” morning. Tanya George ( @tanyatypes ) is a Mumbai-based type designer whose practice is anchored in a fascination with the expressive power of letters, stemming from a childhood instinct to draw, decorate, and play with letterforms. “In fact, the logo that I currently use is something that I first sketched in the margins of my notebook in school.” Today, her work moves fluidly between typography, type design, print, and three-dimensional explorations of script. For George, letters are not merely tools for reading; they are vessels for emotion, mood, and meaning. “I’ve been fascinated with the ability to express things with letters, not just reading them but hiding meaning inside the shapes themselves, whether it’s love or surprise or disgust or horror.” Her journey formally began at the JJ Institute of Applied Art, where she specialised in calligraphy, typography, and lettering—eventually leading her to pursue a Master’s in typeface design. But the roots of her practice draw from the visual language of cities, old signages, and the textures of everyday life. “Older lettering from books and magazines really inspires me… and the city is a perennial source. I love walking around new cities, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells.” George’s work often blurs the line between legibility and abstraction, pushing the boundaries of how a letter can exist while still being recognisable. Her sculptural project, Glottosaurus, embodies this spirit. It merges her love of metal type with kinetic mobiles. “As a type designer, I’m very focused on legibility… but the other end of the spectrum interests me too... how much can you skew something and still make it identifiable.” Using shapes inspired by Hindi, English, and Malayalam, Glottosaurus imagines how sounds might balance, shift, and dance inside the mouth across languages. 📸: Tanya George ( @tanyatypes ) #estdtalent
