The Thinking Hand 13 May - 20 June 2026 Tanvi Kant is an interdisciplinary artist exploring embodied memory through playful, tactile engagement with materials. For The Thinking Hand, raw materials hang from the ceiling, ready to be foraged, handled and remade. During the exhibition, the Devonshire Collective team will learn tea-making, developing a new blend shaped by visitors and local edible plants in collaboration with Rooted Community Food. Tanvi will host a series of gatherings in the space. The Thinking Hand is a process-led exhibition by artists Tanvi Kant, Richard Phoenix, Tom Pope and Anne-Marie Watson. The project unfolds through participation and exchange, engaging with our neighbourhood and local communities, turning Devonshire Collective’s gallery into a site of shared making.

𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴, 2011, a ring made at art college for an exhibition at Galerie Marzee, NL. 🌑🌒🌓 Made with entwined strands of hair from a total of 9 members of my family and friends. Twisted together with precious metal thread, fine gold wire, horse hair, cotton and featuring a tiny real sequin from an antique trimming sourced in Rajasthan, India. This ring was the prompt I shared with jeweller @syannvanniftrik as part of a recent jewellery exhibition 'From our own correspondence' at Atelier in Brighton - curated by the wonderful @kathiemurphy . The last image shows the lovely silver and mixed media necklace Syann made in response to my prompt. With engraved words featuring on silver moon like shapes taken from my hand-written notes that accompanied the ring. Thank you @atelierbrighton for hosting the exhibition and for selling our usual jewellery pieces, Kathie and Syann - plus Faye Hall whose prompt I already shared in a previous post. I will soon share more of the necklace I made in response to Faye's prompt!

Happy Diwali and Nutun Varsh Abhinandan (Happy new year - 2082!) 🪔✨🪔✨🪔 Sharing a new piece reflecting the lighting of divas around Diwali time and in fact all year round for many households - 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 2025 H64 x W14 x D12 cm Unfired clay clings to cotton thread like teardrop beads that hang from a delicate terracotta spiral, poised on a single pin. The beads drape downward, a cluster resting onto a form reminiscent of a divo (oil lamp). Like a mala (prayer bead string), the arrangement echoes the quiet repetition of daily prayers offered with a lit divo. Currently showing @common.clay until end of November 2025. Beeching Road Studios, Bexhill, East Sussex Open Wednesdays - Fridays, 10am - 5pm This work was developed during Common Clay x @workingclasscreativesdatabase artist residency across Summer 2024 - Winter 2025.

'from our own correspondence' opens tomorrow, Thursday 18 September, @atelierbrighton from 6pm. It’s on until 9 November, open daily 11.00am - 5.00pm. The exhibition is made up of one-off jewellery pieces in response to one jeweller’s response to another jeweller’s prompt. The project and exhibition is curated by @kathiemurphy and displayed with assistance from @annabetwyndham and hosted by @atelierbrighton . As part of the chain I received a collage from @fayehalldesign accompanied with a note to say it didn’t need to be returned - I took this to be permission to work with it directly as main material for the necklace I made ✂ ✂ ✂ Early experiments included cutting it into fine strips and stitching it with horsehair and cotton thread, weaving it, folding it and bending it. From these initial experiments I knew I had to strengthen it, so the back of the paper has strips of fluorescent pink gaffer tape (leftover material in my studio from workshops). Translating the shapes from Faye’s collage the result is a highly tactile cord threaded with micro geometric paper shapes interspersed with glass beads and textured with knots. Full images will follow later on : )

Beautiful and powerful conversation between Afua Hirsch and Arundhati Roy in Brighton this weekend. Thoughtful questions from the audience and readings from Arundhati's recent memoir Mother Mary Comes to Me. Arundhati Roy is writer of The Doctor and the Saint: Caste, Race and Annihilation of Caste, the debate between B.R. Ambedkar and M.K. Ghandi and The Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire. Plus, many other titles I haven't read. Next on my list though is Azadi: Freedom, Fascism, Fiction. 🔥💫

From this July’s workshop as part of a Birkenstock x Crafts Council collaboration: Your Blank Canvas. This happy group of people came ready to play with fabrics, cords and knots to customise their own Birkenstocks, or their two little one’s (see pic 7 😍) For this project I also displayed a spiralling window installation to complement the workshop themes. A few highlights…a mother and teenage daughter who attended together. The daughter started improvising with her own methods of construction and created cords into a bow inspired by an animated games character I have no idea about. Plus two mothers of very young children who joined us that evening; one of which who came out for the evening for first time since the birth of her 8-month old. Thank you to all who joined us including staff from both @birkenstock and @craftscouncil Photos: @nicolemgomes Little video clip at the end by me. A little bit about the studio in Shoreditch - The BIRKENSTOCK STUDIO: WALK WITH ME is the brand's first global creative community space, dedicated to celebrating craftsmanship, community, and the journey of self-expression. Since its opening in February 2024, Birkenstock states their vision has been to provide a creative space that is accessible to all. Aiming to bring like-minded people together, inspire collaboration, and encourage the sharing of ideas and skills.

A tiny glimpse of the wonder that is Wriggle Room, an early years programme for under 5s and their care-givers, co-developed with Willingdon Trees Community Centre and Towner's Learning team. Massive thanks to a joyous year of collaboration with the fabulous and invaluable @mollieowls x @willingdontreescommunity volunteers, staff and families. Plus incredible support from volunteers and staff at our off-site sessions, and the wider @townergallery team. We've painted multiverses, melted citrus ice-cakes, built dens in Friston Forest and created fairy portals. We've taken our Wrigglers to Berwick Church, Middle Farm, and to a local pond to float bark tree boats. We've helped water thirsty beds @rooted.community.food . and I've even cooked a family lentil recipe and made mini pancakes in the community centre kitchen - both approved by a very discerning toddler. Next week, join us for special drop-in events marking the end of the year and welcoming the summer season. Wriggle Room's final session before our summer break for under-5s and their care-givers: Tuesday 22 July 2025 10am - 1pm with an interactive musical performance with @tara_soundscreative Playing with colourful inks, shadow play and edible sculpture! Baby sensory play, story-time and food! 🎨🍓🍇🌼 For the whole family, an open-ended afternoon of making: Saturday 26 July 2025 12pm - 4pm Tactile and sensory making with clay, leaves, petals, and light and shadow 🌸🌼👐🏽🔦 📍Towner Gallery, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ Let us know if you're attending by booking on the Towner Eastbourne website > 'What's On' pages.
