Last May I was invited on a bucket list trip to learn about mezcal in Oaxaca, Mexico. @delmagueymezcal took us through the Sierra Madre mountains to 3 of the oldest mezcal producers’ homes and palenques where they’ve been distilling with the same methods for over 400 years, passing down traditions through their families for many generations. We were able to help in different stages of the process at each distillery. After touring their palenques and giving them a hand, bucking around large wild agave pinas, they brought us into their homes and fed us all dinner. So humble and so proud, I could absolutely feel an enormous pride in who they were and that they were truly happy to share their food and stories with us. Seeing these old copper stills, with fresh spring water being pumped from the ground underneath, fires roaring right next to fermenting agave in large wooden vats all with no electricity was a sight to behold. We toured the Del Maguey facility and tried shit that’s not in existence anymore and never will be. The street art was some of the best I’ve ever seen, not only because it was bad ass art, because it held heritage and meaning that was palpable. Beyond grateful for such a humbling experience.
