On the Ground
Look One: THE GAHMEN ⚡️
Ethan wears the Classic Cotton Shirt with Lightning Sleeve Panel, Black Cotton Suit Pants with Couching Embroidery, and Heavy Canvas “Jacket” with Seed Stitch Embroidery.
The embroidery on the pants represents the redrawing of electoral boundaries (e.g. Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC), and the embroidery on the jacket is a reference to a speech by PM Lee in 2006.
‘On the Ground’ deals with Singapore’s political system through the lens of an opposition party volunteer. Examining electoral maps through hand embroidery and machine knitting, the collection questions Singapore’s flawed democracy and the positions of power that are held by men. Each look represents a member in civic society, calling for collective action, greater accountability, and the hope for more progressive women in politics.
