We’ve welcomed local, interstate, and international artists into the studio to work with a carefully curated blend of iconic vintage gear and modern technology. It has been a privilege welcoming so many people to SynthTemple and a thrill to see our vision come to life. Always refining. Always levelling up. Studio 2 has seen a few upgrades lately — we’ve added a pair of ATC SCM25A Pro Mk 2 nearfield monitors to complement the Genelec Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 system, and captured a few new rack shots for those who appreciate the finer details in signal chain and sound. For producers used to PMC 6-2s, we can bring those in from Studio 1, and Barefoot MM27s are available on request. Built around a Pro Tools Ultimate rig, Studio 2 is designed for precision — ideal for tracking vocals or drums from the Solo Room, recording live sessions from Studio 1, and mixing in stereo or Dolby Atmos with absolute accuracy. An April highlight was having Melbourne purveyors of funk, @mondo_freaks live record full on 70s and 80s retro session sessions using a host of rare and unusual synthesizers and drum machines. 1. Fun couple of lockout days earlier in April with 8 of the @mondo_freaks crew tracking live with Cam Trewin engineering. Such a unique groove using the best of the old and new tech. Studio Happenings This week our Solo Room and Studio 2 have seen the harp and woodwind parts for episode 6 of an upcoming TV series finished. Synth Pods in Studio 1 have also been given a work out with particular curiosity and experimentation shown by those booking the Roland System 700 in Synth Pod G. Collarts lecturer @mubakka , together with a final year student, had a ball exploring the possibilities. To amp up their fun the SynthTemple pedal FX “crash cart” (pictured here) provided some support to one end of the System 700 with some @mozztronics optical compression. We are now gearing up for a week where we live track a 7 piece band. Our team thrives on the mayhem and creativity of these larger sessions. #studiolife #rolandsystem700 #recordingstudio

While Tony writes, this week Steve has attacked the Waveterm in the Tech Shop as the hours turn to days and the repair that he has been putting off a year is almost conquered. The Waveterm B needs some adjustments to the video driver board which runs a cathode ray picture tube including generating 11,000V for the screen (yikes, be careful Steve)!!! The screen image is a little rotated so Steve has loosened the yoke retainer to rotate it a tiny bit. One of the Wave 2.3’s is dropping memory and the other works fine. Not in shot is the PPG PRK FD 72 note weighted keyboard that completes the system. Soon they will be back in service in SynthTemple Studio 1 for you to experiment with, joining the likes of Grace Jones, Laura Branigan, ABC, Depeche Mode, Marillion, A-ha & Tangerine Dream who used it extensively. An extraordinary Australian synthesizer has arrived at SynthTemple. This incredible instrument was built by Chris Harold in the early 1980’s based on the circuits of the ETI 4600 synthesizer project. It was re-cased and massively upgraded by Chris some years later and a new front panel and aluminium case were fabricated. It has 8 VCO’s, 4 resonant filters, all switchable between low-pass and high-pass and it has a custom pin type patch panel. The modifications were made for live use and added a custom pedal board that also contains a set of programmable drum pad trigger inputs. It has a comprehensive programmer system and many, many features. It’s soon to make a visit to the SynthTemple tech room for a thorough service and calibration and installation of MIDI before going into service in studio 1. #synthesizer #vintagesynth #recordingstudio #producer
