𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗲 & 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 The canoe race at Street Manatee & Manatee Race 2026 brought energy, excitement, and community spirit to communities around Lake Ossa and River Sanaga in southwestern Cameroon. Teams from different villages paddled with pride, reminding everyone how deeply local communities are connected to the river and the Lake, which all host the African manatee. For generations, canoes have been an integral part of everyday life here, used for fishing, transportation, and cultural traditions passed down over time. Through activities like this, Street Manatee continues to show that protecting the African manatee and preserving cultural heritage can go hand in hand. We are grateful for the financial support of Play for Nature and @synchearth that made this activity possible.

Congratulations to Marina Kameni for winning a Whitley Award!

🎉 Known as the ‘Green Oscars’, this prestigious international conservation prize awards £50,000 to support locally led conservation.
Having supported Marina through our Amphibian Programme since her early career, we are absolutely delighted to see her work receiving the recognition it deserves.

🐸 Going from strength to strength, in recent years she has also received a Mohammed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund award and a Future For Nature Award. Beyond the seed funding it began with, our support for Marina has included covering travel – to learn from the Herp Ghana team and to attend the World Congress of Herpetology in Malaysia – alongside mentorship.   Marina's success is a reminder of what long-term, core funding can make possible – and why investing in the people who protect species is so important. Providing flexible support for young and early to mid-career conservationists allows passionate grassroots leaders to stay working for nature, building the resilient sector that we need. Since founding the first female-led herpetological NGO in Cameroon, Marina has continued to inspire communities to care about amphibians and we can't wait to see what other achievements await her! 💚 @whitleyawards @whitleyfundfornature @marinakameni @herp_ghana @herpcameroon @ffnfoundation @speciesconservationfund #Frogs #Amphibians #Whitley #Cameroon

When children learn to see nature not as something to use, but as something to relate to, everything changes. A child who sees a tree only for its wood may grow up to cut it when needed. But a child who understands that the tree protects their home from tides, holds the soil together, and shelters birds and insects, will grow up to protect it. This shift is not small. It shapes how future decisions are made. Instead of asking, “What can I take from this?” they begin to ask, “How do we care for each other?” For example, rather than saving a tree because it is “useful,” children begin to see how trees, soil, water, birds, and people are all connected, how they need each other to survive. And from there, the goal is no longer to protect one resource, but to protect the whole forest. This is how long-term change happens. Not through rules, but through relationships. The Nature Culture Fellowship is an initiative to explore this shift, in 2025 we co-created this initiative with the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and CEESP bringing together 65 fellows from 53 countries in a shared learning journey, with 37 community-led projects emerging from it, each exploring how relationships, culture, and lived experience can create the long-term transformation needed in conservation by shifting mindsets from managing resources to caring for relationships that sustain life. If Shanjida is able to continue this work, it is likely that the children she is working with will grow up not simply seeing forests and char lands as resources to use, but as relationships they are part of - living systems they feel connected to, and responsible for protecting and sustaining. Thank you to the support of Synchronicity Earth and other funders and partners for making this project a reality. #CultureIsConservation #NatureCulture #KinshipWithNature #Biodiversity #YouthForNature #IndigenousWisdom #NarrativeShift #RegenerativeFuture #GYBN #EnvironmentalJustice #MoreThanHuman #Sustainability #ProtectNature

The largest mobilisation of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil! 🌎 From the 5 -11 April, over 7,000 Indigenous people from across the country gathered in Brasília, uniting their voices to defend their rights in the face of mounting threats to both their territories and their lives from extractive industries. The Acampamento Terra Livre (Free Land Camp) has been held annually for the past 22 years. Emerging from the Indigenous movement in 2004, it has grown into the country’s principal platform for advancing territorial demands and calling for government accountability. Carla Bengoas, our Biocultural Diversity Manager, and Grace Iara Souza, our Latin America Partner Relations Manager, observing this year’s gathering – an excellent opportunity for them to meet partners and allies, learn firsthand about their priorities, and join them in celebration. 'Our future is not for sale: WE ARE THE ANSWER' was the theme of this year’s camp, echoed throughout the streets of Brasília during a vast march to Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square), the symbolic centre of Brazil’s government. At the heart of the movement’s demands is the legal recognition (demarcation) of Indigenous lands. This remains a vital step toward safeguarding ecosystems, protecting ways of life, and upholding rights that are fundamental not only to Indigenous Peoples but to the future we all share. Thank you to Carla Bengoa for capturing these incredible moments in photos! 📷 To learn more about Indigenous Peoples in Brazil, please consider following @apiboficial and @yvyrupa.cgy . #DemarcaYvyrupa #Brazil #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousRights

Three women. Three ocean stories. One shared mission. 🌊 We are so proud to announce the first recipients of the Ocean Stewardship Award – Emilia Palma Tuki, Alanna Matamaru Smith, and Kathryn Audroing – each bringing their own community, culture, and expertise to the fight for our ocean's future. This award is a gift to the future, founded in the spirit of the late Dr. Kristina Gjerde, who believed the ocean's greatest champions are often those closest to it. Congratulations to all three. 💙 Swipe to meet them. →

Happy International Women's Day! (...yesterday) To inspire us for this year's Women's Day, we looked no further than the stories shared by women leaders in the Congo Basin coming together to reflect on the challenges and rewards of their roles bringing communities together to protect nature. We spoke to attendees of a wellness retreat for women leaders held by our partner Terra Mucho about what it really means to be a woman leader in the Congo Basin. Read the full discussion in today's story or through our link in bio. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenLeaders #IWD2026
