Synapsefirer has had for a while this particular take on a hardcore. It’s hyperactive and vertiginous, particularly inflected by the jittering, provocative gait of Latin club or the carnival playfulness of Frenchcore. Returning to Realist after 11 months, it’s interesting to see how his sound has evolved. The generic palette has widened, in a way that makes that sound less confrontational, less purely cerebral. It is however wider, and thus the frame for surprise, for redrawing coexistence between hardcore and hardgroove, speed garage and DnB, broader too.
SF’s Realist mix is like an account of this evolving taste and this evolving poise. He is still deeply colouring an education in the uptempo with guaracha, Latin club and sonics. There’s much that’s of the usual imprint, the pounding low-end of gabber and skittish holler of rawstyle, blent aside vocals borrowed from baile funk or raptor. The pacing is shifting. More time is now dedicated to the hypnosis of a four-to-the-floor techno. There are touches of fidget, French and electro house at like 2x speed. Hardcore is the ever-loved foundation but it’s a foundation less immediately central, diverged from for preludes in entrancement or codas more anarchic than particular musical structures might allow. So Synapsefirer’s charm and machinic edge come yet through. Infesting a schematic music with the untrammelled shrillness of an adame tune say, lends it a further feverishness, shunts it further into the penumbral space of the overwhelming. That’s always seemed Synapsefirer’s MO. To borrow rapidly from guaracha, ritmada with the intent of resounding hardcore in a manner that pushes it further into a productive feverishness. The final few tracks engorge a panoply of genres and spew back up an aleph of grimy, online dance music. It’s knavish, thoughtful, where somewhere in the febrility is restated potentiality.

“Declared Digital” marks one year since I began learning to produce in FL Studio.
Fuelled by distorted kicks and a collage of UK Garage samples, each track channels euphoria and nostalgia. Baile Funk and Jersey Club rhythms inject a unique, high-speed danceability, giving the EP an experimental edge.
Queer EDM producers and DJs have been central to sustaining my love for hardcore. In uncertain times, it’s vital we recognize our talents and continue to support one another.
