The inimitable @a.k.a.joeyskaggs making good trouble at @art_and_place . Posted @withregram@a.k.a.joeyskaggs I thought I was getting on a flight to Germany to deliver my keynote at the Art & Place conference (link in bio) in Saarbrücken. Instead, I wound up giving it via Zoom—from a prison cell. Not literally, of course. But I dressed for the part. A fitting backdrop for a talk on creative dissent. Guerrilla theater, unsanctioned public art, protests in disguise—these are the tools I’ve used to question authority and reclaim public space. Sometimes with humor. Sometimes with a bullhorn. Always with intent. While my prison cell was symbolic, the consequences of challenging power are very real. So, this was a reminder: dissent isn’t just a right. It’s a necessity. And we need to protect the freedom to speak out—especially when it’s uncomfortable. Thanks to the organizers @art_and_place for inviting me. And to everyone still raising hell where it matters. #ArtAndPlace #JoeySkaggs #CreativeDissent #GuerrillaTheater #ArtAsProtest #ZoomFromPrison #conference #artoftheprank #artoftheprankmovie #activism #graffiti #streetart #contemporaryart #performanceart #filmpremiere #publicart

This call for papers seeks submissions on the theme of CRIMINAL/LIMINAL. Street art and graffiti are often defined with reference to the art/crime nexus. Older understandings of illicit art on the streets regularly framed it in criminological terms, but Jeff Ferrell notes, this understanding now coexists with a growing appreciation of street art and graffiti as ‘artistic undertakings’. With street art and graffiti now recognised as bona fide art forms, should we resist this becoming a purely art historical narrative? What role does ‘criminality’ continue to play in the life of graffiti and street art? Is the risk of ‘getting caught’ still central to the thrill of illicit artistic activity? For graffiti writers, the answer is probably yes, but for “street artists” and muralists, it’s more complicated. And when we factor in intersectionality, politics, and vulnerabilities, it gets even more knotty. Thrill is ever relative to risk, and for some of us (i.e., non cis-white-straight-male artists/writers) the very real risk of violence and harassment may outweigh the thrill of illicit art on the streets in practice. Nuartjournal.com But is there is a “third way” that might defeat this art/crime binary? There is a manifold of hidden spaces in the city that exemplify Clement’s productive third landscapes – and the sense of relative safety that may come with working in ‘invisible’ and temporarily abandoned structures. Painting in derelict forgotten spaces isn’t generally prosecuted, but yet it isn’t exactly legal, so creative practice here arguably exceeds street/gallery; art/crime dichotomies. For this issue, we seek interdisciplinary contributions from scholars and practitioners that critically address the role of ‘criminality’ and ‘liminality’ – however conceived - in the life of contemporary street art and graffiti.

Please help. Ramadan should be a time of empathy, generosity, and love. Posted @withregram@thisislimbo Urgent Appeal: Join Us in Supporting Palestinian Communities Under Attack - link to donate in bio! The humanitarian situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly over the past year, with settler violence reaching an all-time high. Recent military operations have led to widespread destruction and loss of life. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have already been forced from their homes, dozens of communities have been displaced, entire refugee camps have been emptied, essential infrastructure destroyed and overall state-backed violence roars. As the sacred period of Ramadan approaches, the Palestinian communities in the West Bank face unique adversities. With food scarcity and rising prices, the traditional ingredients of Ramadan are especially costly. In these challenging times, the ability to maintain tradition and commemorate Ramadan with dignity is under threat. In response, culture_of_solidarity have teamed up with @rabbis.for.human.rights and other sister initiatives and organizations to support 500 families across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Our goal: raising 125,000 NIS to provide support to these resilient communities. Ramadan is a time of empathy and generosity, and we invite you to take part in this campaign— by giving what you can as a way to embody these values together. At a time when so many forces are working tirelessly to destroy any path toward a shared and just future, solidarity is the stubborn hope we must hold on to. Join us! — Photo by @twinkyyyy Special thank you to @tsukapluto for creating the beautiful graphic

Our awards program is not just for visual researchers! We also seek nominations for visual activism including art in public space. Last year’s ACAR (Anti Colonialism & Anti Racism) Visual Activism Award winner was the incredibly powerful @unmutegaza project. The IVSA Awards Committee felt that this grassroots yet international campaign was a best practice example of how to achieve a global impact through collective visual activism. Deadline for nominations Jan 24. See link in bio or DM for more details. Award ceremony in June at our annual conference in South Korea! Posted @withregram@thetagconference Last October in Groningen, The Netherlands, we celebrated the most ambitious Tag Conference so far. With a dream line-up of leading European graffiti specialists, we offered the opportunity to discuss and frame the nascent working field of graffiti heritage. These are images from the first day of talks, at the gorgeous Groene Zaal at Minerva Art Academy, in the building that used to host the Groninger Museum. The historical 1984 exhibition of canvases from NYC subway artists took place in the room right next door from where we were speaking. Check our website for a full photo report of the conference, and read all about the many talks and activities that took place in those three days of action-packed graffiti nerdiness. A heartfelt thank you to Hugo Engwerda and the awesome @kladmuur Foundation team for dreaming this up with us, and to @groningerarchieven for their vision and invaluable partnership. Thank you to our speakers and to the many visitors, you made the event. We thank @museumaandea , @academieminerva and Oude RKZ for hosting this conference. Thanks to @dianaozon , @insta.grunn , @francois_chastanet , @quikrtw , @micklarock01 , @lestergabriellester , Pinox’82, DJ BD and Idiots Magazine for their very special contributions, and to @mrgraffiti.shop , @hitzerot , @chemistry.publishing and @stickit for bringing their books and zines. Did not have enough yet? Then you are in luck! After an intense 2024 with events in Linz and Groningen, 2025 will bring new Tag Conference events in Vienna and New York City. We keep building bridges between the underground and the institution, stay tuned for more serious and informed graffiti research! If you are interested in street art, don’t miss the @art_and_place Conference, our new project with a focus on street art and public art in general. Next May in Saarbrücken, Germany. The call for papers is open until January 20th. Yet our main event for this 2025 is a larger-than-ever @unlockfair planned for the last 4 days of August in Chemnitz, Gemany. Expect new, special features and a crazy line-up of guests!
