It's time to give canners, some of the city's most hardworking environmental workers who almost single-handedly drive the success of our state’s most successful recycling system, a raise.
On May 26th, we’re holding a one-day, pop up redemption center - where we will simulate the passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, and redeem all bottles and cans at the 10-cent rate. This event will build awareness for this critical environmental bill that also supports some of the city's most vulnerable populations.
Please join us for the opening of Siyan Wong’s exhibition “Make it 10 Cents” and silent auction on April 14th to raise the funds to pay canners and host this event. Please also join the panel following the pop up redemption center on May 26th.
Stay tuned for locations!
🗞 "For many canners, a greater return would mean less time on the streets and more time to devote to education, family and working toward a more stable income."
We highly recommend checking out Andrew Li's essay in the New York Times, discussing his grandpa's experience canning in NYC. Essay is linked in our bio. (Message us for a gift article if you don't have access 🎁)
If you know your local canners, please share with them that on Tuesday 5/26, 8am-12 noon, all cans and bottles are redeemed at 10 cents, except for dairy and juice containers, at a pop-up redemption center in Columbus Park, Chinatown. More soon!!
Too learn more about canning in NYS, the current New York Container law governing canning, and the bill aimed to change it (the Bigger Better Bottle Bill), please come to my current exhibit at Welcome to Chinatown (115 Bowery), M-F 10am-5pm. It’s on view until Friday 5/29/26. Thanks! @surewecannyc
Thank you @Stantec team for the hard work helping us sort through thousands of bottles & cans, and for the lively discussion during the educational section of the day! ⭐

In New York, for the third year in a row, we are very close to passing the country’s strongest plastic reduction law.
The plastics and petrochemical industries are spending millions on lobbyists to prevent the bill from passing (you might have seen their ads as well).
There are more of us than there are of them, but we need your help.
Join us Monday, May 11 in Albany for an advocacy day in support of the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, Assembly bill 1749A / Senate bill 1464A.

🌷💚 Thanks for celebrating Earth Day with us!
We picked up 8 bags worth of trash from the neighborhood, sorted hundreds of bottles & cans for recycling, planted dozens of seeds for our garden, heard from 3 community experts about canning in NYC!
It’s Earth Day! And we’re celebrating with our friends at Sure We Can, a local community recycling organization.
We’re also demanding that the New York State legislature finally do the right thing and pass the Bigger, Better, Bottle Bill (S.5684).
Independent canners are a predominantly immigrant workforce and actually help NYC achieve incredibly high recycling rates. Our bottle redemption program works. Now it’s time to modernize and expand it. We need higher redemption rates because 5 cents is too low!
We urge our State leaders to support our canners and take climate action this Earth Day!
