Welcome AIR Kara Wilkes!! Sign up for Kara’s workshop at the link in our bio 🔗 VISUALIZE. PAINT. DANCE. Saturday, May 16th | 1:00pm – 4:00pm $45 In this immersive workshop, Artist-in-residence Kara Wilkes guides participants through a creative, multi-sensory journey that blends visualization, writing, visual artmaking, and dancing. Inspired by Anna Halprin’s Psychokinetic Visualization Process, Kara shares a method of choreographing she developed during her MFA in Dance research focusing on embodied trauma and healing techniques using dance. The workshop engages participants in a guided visualization and a writing process that prepare them for expressive drawing/painting. Group art stations are provided to encourage relaxed, collaborative experiences while participants make visual artwork. Inspired by their paintings, participants then translate their creations into movement, developing personal dance phrases and expanding them through partner or small group collaborations. The workshop culminates in an optional sharing and reflection circle, where participants may present their artwork and movement pieces, engage in discussion, and close with either a guided meditation or playful group improvisation—leaving with both their artwork and a deeper connection to their creative expression. Partial scholarships available by request to [email protected].

THANK YOU! What a whirlwind of support we experienced this Idaho Gives! Thank you to each and every thoughtful and generous donor who helped us reach and SURPASS our goal. Particular thanks to the Montague-Sauriol Charitable Foundation for placing a donation in honor of Charles Roy Montague, which set us across the goal line. Thank you to all our donors for helping us raise $12,295! These contributions are pivotal to our work and mission, so thank you, all, for the momentous, affirming, invigorating support. With your support of Surel’s Place, you support artists and you support community. 📷 Artist-in-Residence Marshall Toomey (November, 2025) presenting at his final event where he unveiled his completed painting of Boise’s Black Pioneer: Elvina Moulton at the Idaho Black History Museum, with support from the Boise City Department of Arts & History. 📸 Gregg Mizuta @greggmizuta THANK YOU! #idahogives #AHGrant #surelsplace #surelsplaceartistresidency #surelmitchellliveworkcreatedistrict

It's almost time for @surelsplace BIENNIAL PARTEE & SHRINKY DINK ART AUCTION! My absolute favorite party in Garden City. . Saturday, June 6th | 6:00pm – 9:00pm . $20 | Partee Admission $50 | Partee Admission + Dinner . Get Ready. They only hold the Shrinky Dink Art Auction every other year, so if you miss it, you’ll have to wait two more years. . What is it? It’s our biggest fundraiser that features the artwork of dozens of talented local artists who are asked to use the (at first take) unassuming, crafty, children’s art toy of Shrinky Dinks, which are bake-able, shrinkable plastic sheets. But, (at second take) the art material becomes limitless, elevated, surprising, and utterly creative. The ante always goes up, and this unusual art exhibition is not to miss.

It has already been over a month since my show at Surel’s Place, and I still find myself thinking about my time in Boise often. Every few days, I tell someone new about the experience, and I always seem to remember another fond detail, usually tied to someone who was part of the journey. I loved being on the river, in such a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, and spending time taking in the foothills, mountains, and canyons. But without a doubt, the people made my time in Garden City. I was surprised and genuinely moved by the warmth and openness of the neighbors. Early in the residency, I shifted from focusing only on productivity in the studio to really drinking in life and becoming part of the community. I loved asking questions and receiving little lore drops about every nook and cranny, every building, tree, and person. The passion of the people around Surel’s Place is infectious, and I found myself completely taken with the scene. Thank you to everyone who made my experience so much more than just time spent painting in a studio.

Here’s a sneak preview of my Shrinky Dink art piece that I made for the upcoming @surelsplace auction in June. This is titled Topographic House. I sewed it together using leaf stems at the joints. This is about 3-1/2 inches high. And I put a tea light inside so it can light up. I’m looking forward to seeing all the other Shrinky Dink artworks. #shrinkydinkart #surelsplace #idahoartist #artauction #lisaflowersross

It’s Day Two for Idaho Gives! With your support, you can help us reach our $7,000 goal, of which we are currently 14% of the way there! Each and every gift directly goes towards supporting our mission: to support artists by providing them time and space to explore their creative process, cultivating a vibrant, inspiring, and connected community. Thanks to your support, you bring community together. Community that gathers and grows at workshops like the one pictured here where participants were led by Artist-in-Residence Alieh Rezaei @aali_zaee (August, 2025) who taught techniques on wool felting including wet felting and needle felting. Our residents’ workshops are wide-ranging, educational, and inspiring, and are guided by the unique perspectives and know-how of our visiting artists. Support Surel’s Place. Support Community. Idaho Gives is HERE! We have a goal of $7,000 this year, and we need your help to get there. Contributions made towards this goal will support all the many ways and means that Surel’s Place does the important work we do: providing artists with time and space to explore their creative process, cultivating a connected, vibrant, and inspiring community. With your support, we support artists. Artists like Ainaz Alipour @ainaz_alipour who was an artist-in-residence in February, 2025. Ainaz is an Iranian interdisciplinary artist working with textiles, soft sculpture, and digital media. Of her work, Ainaz says, “Through fiber and textile-based forms, I try to create spaces that hold memory, tenderness, and resilience.” When asked what 5 words come to mind when thinking of Surel’s Place, Ainaz shared: support, love, community, creation, time. Support Surel’s Place. Support artists. Give at 🔗 in bio #idahogives #idahogives2026 #surelsplace #surelsplaceartistresidency #surelmitchellliveworkcreatedistrict

Have you ever made a Shrinky Dink? Come with me for a little behind the scenes as I create my donation for the Surel’s Place Shrinky Dink Auction ✨ Surel’s Place creates space for artists to grow, experiment, and be supported, and I’ve experienced that firsthand. It’s rare and it matters. So this piece isn’t just something I’m making, it’s something I’m giving. From sketch to shrink to the final layers, with a little gold leaf because I can’t help myself, I’m letting the process stay a little raw, a little playful, and a little unexpected. I hope to see you at the auction on June 6th 🤍
