4 days until Magda at Tengu! >> swipe right for some highlights of @magda_official ’s solo and collaborative projects over the past 20 years >> Despite being dubiously titled “the mistress of minimal” back in the mid 2000s while a key member of Richie Hawtin’s M_nus ensemble, Magda’s own productions and DJ sets were anything but the rigid and stale sounds that genre quickly became known to be. Instead, she injected a crucial dose of funk, sleaze and swagger into her grooves which highlighted her as a prodigious talent within the millieu of stoic v neck bros who quickly ruined the genre and any creativity that went with it (and who’s music subsequently went on to dominate euro bins at record stores for many years lol). Her varied influences became immediately apparent on her rare solo missions and as part of a variety of duos/trios such as Run Stop Restore (w/ Troy Pierce and Marc Houle), Cornerbred (w/ Daniela Huerta) and Blotter Trax (w/ T.B. Arthur) - a fun mix of late 80’s proto house, no wave disco, electro, goth + more. Royce Laroca joins Magda next week in Tengu! Hailing from Brazil and based in Dublin for many years now, Royce is one of the city’s hardest working and talented DJs. A weekly fixture of the various clubs that adorn the capital, he’s proven himself a phenomenally versatile selector thanks to his nerd-level knowledge and committed dedication to record collecting. As founder of @realtalks.art , he’s run parties across various spots inviting the likes of Mari.te, Sakro, Keen and plenty more. He also recently launched a label arm, whose inaugural release is a 5 track V/A featuring local hero Lukey amongst many others. Simply put, he’s got the juice - a dance music lifer and house music fanatic who is the perfect compliment to Magda next week. Next month w/ Magda and Yamamori Tengu! We veer off our usual piste to co-host a modern house legend in Magda at Tengu on 7 March. Having been smitten with her set at Waking Life’s Outro Lado stage a couple years back, we had to invite her to our fave spare room. While she gained notoriety through early 00’s “minimal”, her music and sets are really anything but - a proper fun and wild mix of house in all its various shapes, sizes ‘n sleaze.
