NEXT, let’s talk about risk taking as a DJ! I surprised myself by blending these two records on the fly at @qualitytimebar a couple of weeks ago. I actually think the blend was tighter at the gig! 😂🙌🏽
I surpised myself because for a while, I AVOIDED trying to blend “Pull Up.” It’s a tricky song to mix, requiring you to really work that pitch!
I remember when I FIRST attempted to learn to DJ with vinyl in 2024. Before I started teaching myself around this time last year. Didn’t have my own turntables or mixer at the time, so I brought a few of my 45s to @miyagirecordshop where I was taking lessons.
Guess I was a bit overzealous because I tried to mix “Pull Up” after like 3 lessons. 🤣 It’s safe to assume that it did not go well LOL, I was LOST! And discouraged.
But at this particular gig, which was on March 28th, I decided to take a risk. Be brave. Believe in myself and try. I had “Pull Up” playing. The groove made me think of “Hold On to Your Love.” Cued it up and started that blend. You could hear that groovy Sade bass line come in. @shondervis who invited me was pleasantly surprised and cheered me on as I held that extended blend. I did it!
So I wanted to practice it again for future use. You can hear the songs going out of time for a bit, but you can also hear me get them back in time. I’m proud of the blend. I’m proud of myself and my continued growth. 🥂

About last night! I had an absolute BLAST playing for the first time at @waxvinylbar ! The best of the best play here and so it was an absolute honor to touch the decks!

Shout out to one of my mentors, a veteran DJ & producer, for letting me borrow this incredible extended remix of “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya!” I heard it and instantly fell in love. When thinking of what to pair it with, I remembered the Soca version of “Sweetest Taboo” by Rebles, released a year after the original by Sade. Shout out to @soundwayrecords for the reissue! The fusion of these tropical sounds worked perfectly!
I’m also training myself to pitch ride with my left hand. A challenge, but not impossible.

And @mattroan steps back into his vinyl bag, bringing years of dancefloor chaos and club energy back to his roots for a special V.O.L. set.

A little about Sunshine Rewind, she’s a DJ and passionate record collector hailing from the west side of Chicago. Known for her expansive and eclectic taste, she specializes in vinyl-forward sets spanning boogie, funk, disco, new wave, house, and beyond. Making her DJ debut in the summer of 2024, Sunshine Rewind has quickly emerged as an exciting new presence in the Chicago scene.
