Nutria are relatives of beavers. Their fur has been used as a premier millinery material in the hat industry since the early 20th century for its soft texture and water-resistant properties.
Since they are less cute than their fluffy tailed beaver cousins, their popularity declined. However, their population in the wild surged.
Feeding on mangrove roots and reproducing out of control, nutria have become a major disrupter of fragile riparian ecosystems, the sacred wetlands that protect our lands from the sea (did you know the Mississippi River Delta loses a football field of land every 100 minutes?)
We work with local trappers in the Bayou to procure these reclaimed hides. We can do our part to turn this invasive species, environmental danger, into the finest hats on the market.
