For so long, people have questioned our electability, or even bothered to speak to us as a community worth mobilizing. On Tuesday,
@zohrankmamdani brought so many of us together and showed what happens when campaigns meet us where we are. Beyond thrilled to see him become New York Cityâs first Muslim and first South Asian mayor! Mubarak, Mayor Mamdani!
In a city heavily marked by 9/11, a South Asian Muslim New Yorker took the lead, and our community showed up in force: aunties and uncles, first-time voters, small-business owners, student canvassers, and rideshare drivers. Grassroots teams organized through community centers, temples, mosques, gurdwaras, churches, union halls, chai shops, taxi stands, WhatsApp groups, social media and multilingual phone banks. This is what organizing looks like when we believe weâre electable, and when people speak to us and treat us as those with power and agency.
On the heels of this incredible victory, there is no better way we could announce a new film weâve been working on, Seat At The Table, a feature documentary coming out in 2026, chronicling the rise of South Asian Americans in U.S. politics. Through unprecedented access to groundbreaking campaigns across the country, the film reveals how we are transforming the nationâs political future. This is not a model minority story, this is the story of immigrants dealing with xenophobia and racism from the moment they arrived in the U.S, fighting for their right to vote, and building political power for our community. Zohranâs mayoral victory is proof of that larger arc.
