I’ve always been a learn on the job person: Ive been lucky, and sought out great people to work for in both farming and fabricating: When I moved to Berea, I was basically caught in that triangle of I would farm, sell out at craft shows, and work at a cabinet shop when I would run short on money. The year in Berea I worked so hard during the residency to get my website up and get this business happening! There were definitely some serendipitous moments, like getting a write up in the strategist the day after my website launched (unreal, really!). I didnt really knows a lot of modern broom makers @hannahbquinn is the only one that comes to mind….but it was a craft I could do without much setup and I loved it. Alll of this happened after years of working as a fabricator and a farmer, and weaving brooms since 2013….maybe a story for another day! Are you full time? Tag me if you make a reel with how you got there or comment below! I love these stories! #grateful #artist #meetthemaker photo by @paiv1@hotelsvala
Happy Friday y’all! A little #renovation #inspiration ! We were going through the photos of our renovation with a friend this week: it took us about 2.5 years to renovate this space, while running this business in different parts of the building ( the whole building is about 3600 sq ft I think?). We put an apartment upstairs in what was a storage space, and renovated the downstairs: we did receive a REAP grant for the lighting and insulation, and qualify for the historic preservation tax credit for the work we did. We salvaged, made our own lime plasters and lime wash, got what we could used, and really had a good time on this one (so good were on the house still….). I’ve been renovating and building spaces my whole adult life and I LOVE it! I wish we had taken more photos, but its more I have than many renovations ! Happy to answer any ?? It’s here!! I just got my copies of The Handmade Broom in to send to you all who pre ordered over the coming week! I never thought I’d feel confident enough about anything to write a book; well it turns out I just needed to make thousands of them a year for over a decade to hit my threshold where I felt ready to say something 😂 . I did not find the process easy, but thanks to @christinastallardphoto for shooting over 2000 pictures for this thing, I hope you all have the book I would have wanted! Huge thanks to the folks @bluehillspress for helping this happen!- I’ll be shouting out several folks who helped make this possible all this week!- so snag a book, snag some homemade tools ( or make your own!) and let’s weave! I’ve been so delighted by the response so far, and can’t wait to hear what you all think!
Paul does it all!
He’s a full-time member of our team here at Sunhouse. You can find him in the woodshop, shipping, and now learning to weave baskets!
Thanks to the white oak basketry apprenticeship led by @cedar.creek.farm and supported by @southartstradarts and @kyguild , Paul and others are carrying this traditional craft forward.
P.S. don’t let his focused face fool you, he’s the silliest guy around!

And now for a corner I’ve wanted to photograph since before construction began on this recently completed kitchen we dubbed Park and Palette. Way back last spring at @highpointmarket , at their rather hard-to-find and therefore extra-special feeling @shoppeobject , we found @sunhousecraft and immediately became obsessed. Handcrafted in Kentucky, these everyday objects are nothing short of art. Last fall, when we were designing Park and Palette, we knew we wanted to mount the clients’ rolling pin and cutting board, just as they had always been mounted, albeit in a tucked away, out-of-sight spot. And it was also clear a heavily used kitchen like this needed a broom and dustpan within easy reach. Thus these functional and beautiful objects were part of the design from its earliest stages. The light streaming in, combined with the beauty of everyday tools, is distinctly Shaker, and caught our hearts. Kitchens, of course, are at their best just that: beautiful backdrops for everyday life. The open counter next to this corner, dedicated to small appliances that live proudly out for all to see, makes go-to things accessible, looking intentional rather than tolerated. At SYH, we hold beauty and function equally valuable, and we believe that balance makes for the best homes.

Meet Stuart !
He has officially joined the shop dog team alongside Ray. Ever since Emily has been bringing him to work, there’s even more cuteness overload.

Spring cleaning finds!
Was going through old photos and found these. Something about them just feels like spring.
Thanks again to @arianajordan.maddoxmade for the photos and @sylvatica_forestfarm for modeling.
