Christmas in May? We’re for here for it. @cheeryband ’s writing, singing, and performance is a gift that an intimate audience got to unwrap together last night in St. Pete. Every now and then we get little reminders of why we do what we do and this was one of those moments. We’ve created a home for creatives. Whether in use or not, it’s always here ready to make things happen. When the artist found out on Sunday they’d be visiting family and reached out to us on Monday about performing Wednesday, we took one listen to the music and said let’s run it. As an arts city, St. Pete requires room for spaces and spontaneity that can accommodate traveling and local artists alike. A healthy DIY community means being nimble and willing to take chances knowing there’s still people here that seek out and value raw, authentic, heartfelt expression. The reward is discovering an artist with a captivating voice getting a standing ovation from her father at a last min, impromptu show before heading back to Liverpool. Only their second performance as a new solo act, hearing @ina_tizzi step further into their own was the perfect pairing on a night that felt like a playful continuation of exploration across shared themes between the two artists. Prior to the show, the kindred nature was apparent as we talked with Cheery about the industry at large. At one point, discussing having each heard artists like Arcade Fire or Little Dragon in rooms with only a handful of people decades ago. Music involves and requires a lot of hard work as a foundation, but what often moves the levers beyond that is really just luck. Well, we felt lucky to have experienced last night come together and hope those in attendance did too. Maybe one day we will all fondly remember when we saw Cheery perform on a random weekday night in such a cozy space.
