I’m doing some winter cleaning and found these old band/misc T’s that I used to wear all the time but haven’t in over a year. So I decided to cut them up and turn them into patches.
How to:
1. 🖐️ Lay the shirts over your jacket (or w/e piece you’re putting them on) and fold them to get a visual and help decide on placement. I found this helpful to inform how to cut them.
2. ✂️ Cut the parts out that you want to use as a patch. Cut 1-2 inches of extra border for a seam allowance. Use a ruler & fabric chalk to help cut straight lines. I cut all the usable parts for future patches as well.
3. Cut canvas or heavy denim to back the t shirts. Glue with fabric glue or use a sewing machine to attach. Sewing: fold over the edges and straight stitch, or zig zag stitch the edges for a clean look that won’t fray. Iron edges inward and flat for a clean look.
4. 📌 Arrange and pin the patches in your article of clothing.
5. Attach to jacket via sewing machine or by hand stitching (overcast stitch or running stitch).
- 🧵 Sewing machine: Use a straight stitch or zig zag stitch around the borders. To turn corners, leave the needle in the down position (in the garment) and turn the garment to turn corners. It can be tricky to use a sewing machine in some areas.
- 🪡 Hand stitching: Use regular thread and double it up, or use sashiko or embroidery thread. Tie a knot on one end of the thread. Start from the inside of the garment and go from the outside border into the patch, then move down ~1/2” and repeat. It’s best to cut thread stands under ~18” each or else it gets unruly. Pro tip: use two finger attachable thimbles, one on the inside and one on the outside. Be prepared for it to a while. Enjoy the ride 🧘🏻

• Scrap canvas or heavy denim
