Today is release day for the first issue of Industrial Estate ❤️‍🔥 Featuring over 100 pages of fiction, nonfiction and poetry from working-class writers, Industrial Estate is available from the Subbed In website or from your local independent bookshop (if they don't stock it, order it in!). Link in bio. Shipping worldwide. Issue 1 features fiction by Emma Rayward that shakes down the structural nature of manufactured housing scarcity; a long essay by Jonno Revanche exploring the utility/futility of fantasy/phantasy in collectivising around a revolutionary goal; eviscerating poetry by Lucy Norton, Natalia Figueroa Barroso, j. taylor bell, Justine Keating, Spencer Barberis, and David Stavanger; bottle-o retail gothic in hilarious fiction by Liam Diviney; rumination on ‘drafts of drafts’ in nonfiction by Jennifer Nguyen. And we promise that after reading Hollen Singleton's essay you will never perceive moss the same way again. Industrial Estate is a literary magazine showcasing writing from the working class. Industrial Estate seeks to enhance working-class participation in the literary arts by providing publication opportunities to working-class writers and writers from a working-class background. Upper-class writers are overrepresented in ‘Australian’ publishing, both on the page and behind the scenes. Industrial Estate is an intervention. As it stands, there are very few arts organisations in so-called ‘Australia’ with a mandate to specifically account for the inclusion of working-class writers. Edited by Dan Hogan and Victoria Manifold.

The board of Adelaide Festival's decision to remove Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah from the Adelaide Writers Week program is an overt act of anti-Palestinian racism. It is also a slur that has undermined the work of director Louise Adler, AWW staff, and the wider literary community. Subbed In unreservedly condemns this act of racist censorship and extends solidarity to Dr Abdel-Fattah and all the principled artists who have withdrawn from the festival. Subbed In also condemns the unsophisticated commentary of the SA Labor premier who, to the best of our knowledge, has not once in his career so much as mentioned the anti-Palestinian racism that runs through his state and the institutions his government presides over, let alone seriously addressed it. In Gaza, anti-Palestinianism has risen to the point of genocide. In Australia, anti-Palestinianism has risen to genocide denial. Acts of overt and covert anti-Palestinian racism extend from a deep-seated and dehumanising denial of Palestinian civilisation. Anti-Palestinian racism is a scourge that has for decades been normalised across the media, political and corporate classes and, as demonstrated by the scale of the AF boycott, racism of any kind must never be tolerated.

Our hearts are with the victims of the antisemitic massacre at Bondi, a sickening act of violence and terrorist attack that targeted the Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah. Lives have been stolen, families shattered, and communities devastated. Antisemitism, like all forms of racism, hate, and bigotry, is an abhorrent scourge that must be eradicated from our society. Subbed In extends compassion, love and solidarity to the Jewish community now and always.

Please help Fofa, Afif and their family who continue to endure the fallout of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. For more than two years they have been forcibly displaced time and time again. The family of seven currently live in a tent. Every hour they face the threat of adverse weather, disease, and the Israeli occupation’s lethal breaches of the ceasefire. The genocide has slowed but it has not stopped. Since the ceasefire, Israel has killed the equivalent of two childen every single day in Gaza. Access to food, medicine, education, hygienic amenities and life’s essential needs remains extremely scarce, expensive or absent. While more aid is entering, Israel continues to block the volume required. Refrigerators are blocked as well as critical items needed to rebuild sewage management infrastructure and water treatment systems. Israel maintains control of Gaza’s water and electricity supply. Head over to the Chuffed campaign to donate and follow @fofa2_130 Every contribution helps, however small. Link in bio.

"When they can't sleep because of the bombs, I show them videos of peaceful places with waterfalls and animals. I tell them to imagine we're there, safe and sound. My children, all our children, deserve safety and full stomachs." Dina @ahmed.561993 and her husband Farhan and their children are struggling to survive and rebuild their lives in Deir al-Balah, Gaza. "My darling Julia is five years old and my son Ahmed is only three. Most of their life has been spent in fear, in survival mode. I'm terrified that their little hearts can't bear the fear." Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will directly support Dina and her family. Link in bio.

Please help Fofa, Afif and their family in Gaza as they continue to endure horrific living conditions due to Israel’s genocide. Food remains scarce. The fallout of manufactured famine continues to radiate throughout Palestinian communities, taking lives and destroying families. What little food can be bought is extremely expensive. Please consider donating to help a Palestinian family in Gaza buy food, fruits, and essentials for cooking, including flour, sugar, salt, rice and sorghum. Head over to the Chuffed campaign to donate and follow @fofa2_130 to help amplify their struggle. Every donation helps, however big or small. Link in bio.

Sumud Flotilla activist Abubakir Rafiq at today's solidarity action on Gadigal Nura: "There is nothing to fear when you are on the right side of history." And so the struggle continues, undiminished and dutifully steadfast until liberation, until return. Ceasefire is a welcome reprieve, a dire imperative. Unfortunately, ceasefire is not justice, accountability or liberation. Ceasefire is the genocide decelerating while anti-Palestinian racism, sentiment and genocidal intent perseveres, regroups. Genocidaires remain on the ground in Gaza. The occupation remains and apartheid settlements continue to expand in the West Bank. The Australian government's enrichment of the genocidal state continues unchanged, furnishing Israel with the rhetorical and diplomatic impunity it requires to continue its exterminatory violence, sanction free. Not only that, the Labor-Liberal establishment continues to enrich Israel with all manner of contracts, transactions, trade and capital. The Labor government, who has this year declared Australia an "F-35 country", has even gone so far as to cede usage of stolen Aboriginal lands, waters and airways to Lockheed Martin so it can transport parts for the F-35 genocide jet direct from Australia to Israel in the belly of commercial passenger planes. And there is of course the government's unchanged enrichment of Elbit Systems - an Israeli arms manufacturer central to Israel's commission of genocide against Palestinians. Israel also used Elbit tech to hunt and kill Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom and her colleagues in 2024, bombing them no less than three times as they travelled along a road in Gaza. There are many other instances over the past two years, over decades, the evidence of Australia's complicity in Israel's commission of genocide only continues to mount. We will not stop, we will not rest. Palestine will be free 🇵🇸🗝️

Before the genocide, Ahmed and Julia’s parents operated a grocery store in Gaza. Now their family is suffering due to being deprived of quality food. The trickle of aid entering Gaza is resold at exhorbitant prices. Basic essentials often cost hundreds of dollars. Israel continues to decimate Gaza’s civilian infrastucture as well as block food, medicine and essential supplies from entering the besieged enclave. Please help a Palestinian family survive the genocide. Even a small donation can go a long way. Link in bio.
