SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson “We were the damaged kids” Skins and Punks were not considered the ‘norm’ when these groups first rose to prominence. It’s interesting to me to hear about how these groups were perceived by wider Britain, because the paradox is that these were typically people from the working class. They were just like the rest of those trying to earn a crust. This is the final piece to our interview with the very influential Gavin Watson. New interviews and brand work on the way that I’m excited to share! Thanks to those who consume what I put out into the world.

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson I guess this is growing up. Gavin talks about the transition away from his youth as a Skin, and how he entered into the rave community, which took the British underground by storm during the 80s. 1 E and that was that!

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson One of the most fascinating things about Gavin is how present he was - right there as the subculture was rising, without ever stepping outside of it to observe. I don’t think creatives ever really grasp the weight of what they’re making in the moment. What starts as fun—shooting photos, experimenting, documenting your world - quietly becomes something else entirely. Work that gets revisited, referenced, and eventually, called legendary. He was just a kid - loyal to his mates, close with his brother, rooted in where he came from. SKIN DEEP

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson Skinhead style is part of what makes this sub culture what it is. Levi’s 501’s, original Fred Perry shirts, and shaved heads. Tough, working class, but a level of sophistication that has become a genuinely timeless dress style. Gavin talks about how the dress code developed, and his daily uniform.

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson “That’s why I got into acting, mate. If there’s going to be a Skinhead on T.V, then they better fucking looking proper!” The Skinhead movement was not something that was publicly documented from a film perspective at the time of its rise in sub-culture, until Made In Britain hit the screen. Though depicting a version of Skin that doesn’t truly represent the authentic, original version of it, this film still stands the test of time - its impact still evident decades later. Ultimately, this film carried such resonance that it sparked Gavin’s acting career. R.I.P to the great Alan Clarke Edit: @silly.stuart

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson @madnessband represented a working class sub-sect of Britain where in the entertainment industry, this group were truly underrepresented at the time. This opened the door for Gavin to explore sub-cultures like Skins and Punks - the style and community he saw in Madness, he and many others alike also sought out in ways that were relevant to them. Across the next week, I’ll be releasing 7 cuts from our phone call. The full interview will be available on my website soon.

SUB : BIO’S : Edition 5 : @_gavin_watson When I was 17, I bought my first pair of 8 up Doc Martens in cherry red. Black laces replaced with the yellow ones that they came with as a spare. These boots, and watching ‘This Is England’ for the first time is what lead me to loving the original Skinhead movement - a genuinely misunderstood subculture. At its core, it was Jamaican music, working class pride, and buzz cuts. I might’ve learnt about it from afar, but Gavin Watson lived it. I was lucky to spend an hour on the phone with the cult British photographer and learn about how he turned his own life into one of the most important visual records of youth culture ever captured. Across the next week, I’ll be releasing 7 cuts from our phone call. The full interview will be available on my website soon. In this first part, Gavin talks about the impact of This Is England, and that his book ‘Skins’ was a key reference for director Shane Meadows when he brought this film to life.
