The Decency project does five days at the Colorado School of Mines. Two hundred participants, two hundred spoons, difficult and wonderful chaotic conversation. We invented communities and societal structures from scratch, created food and shelter supply, divided nations, formed trade agreements and religion, argued over priorities and hierarchies, collapsed into violence, picked up the pieces and tried again. @coloradoschoolofmines All hands were protected, thanks to @nocrygear and their generosity. #thedecencyproject #socialpractice #socialpracticeart #allegoryofthespoons #spooncarving #socialengagement #contemporaryart #dialogicalaesthetics #contemporarycraft #adayinthepark #nocrygear

A gathering of the highest order took place in Syracuse with @furnituresociety featuring makers, students, collectors, curators, award recipients and the warmest bundle of caring humans I have the pleasure to know. Grateful to our Board and particularly to @abbymechanic and @arcburn_furniture for their leadership, @rhodalite44 for her energy and dedication. Super round of thanks to @zekemakes for being our extraordinary host!. Thank you for a boost of energy and inspiration to last a long time to come.

FS 25 spotflight: The Decency Project - The Decency Project is an ongoing participatory work forming connection through shared labor. Seeking a bond between people of unlike lived experience, I invite strangers to join me in carving a spoon while having a “difficult” conversation. We are guided by a pedagogy of awareness embracing conceptual and critical thinking. We find critical discourse using abstracted ideals about our ability to coexist, despite our differences. We question what it means to be human: What must I do? What can I do? What must I not do? - Bonding through our shared labor and distracted by the dexterity of hand and material, participants are empowered to explore breakdowns of societal structure and nurture relationships in good faith, in this historic moment of conflict and disconnection. - Together, we question our foundational beliefs and our perceptions of progress, even consider the basis for ever forming cooperative communities at all. Building new tools for interaction, we discover the necessity to understand why we form civilizations before can determine how we might be civil. - #socialpractice #woodcarving #spoons

The Decency Project finished off a 10-day visit to the Colorado School of Mines today. I worked with over 200 bright young scientists - our future engineers, physicists, natural resource specialists - many of whom came every day to carve and talk. We talked about the fact that no technological progress in history is immune to misuse, being used for the benefit of the few and the harm of the many. We questioned how to recognize the circumstances that encourage the existence of those who might profit from their disregard for the harm they cause, and what any individual might be able to do, to scrape just a little off the shame of that disregard. And of course, as always, they did it while fully protected by gloves from @nocrygear . #thedecencyproject #adayinthepark #socialpracticeart #contemporarycraft #contemporaryart #greenwoodworking #dialogicalaesthetics #socialengagement

Join us on Sunday, January 12 from 2-5pm for the Decency Project, a once-in-a-lifetime creative and community experience. Make friends (and wooden spoons) while engaging in thoughtful conversation with artist and facilitator Scott Braun as we explore questions like, “What does it mean to be human? How do we define decency?” Come sit, and carve, and talk, and find answers together. Or at least more questions. @suapyg #decencyproject

The Decency Project at the Colorado School of Mines for the third year in a row. Over 250 participants! Amazing conversations about the ethics of engineering. The students are taught “not to engage in Nazi engineering,” and we spent the week unraveling what that means, what creates the circumstances that call for such a thing, and how we can be proactive in our awareness. Also, we carved a LOT of spoons. I feel full. More pictures to come. #thedecencyproject #allegoryofthespoons #socialpractice #socialpracticeart #spooncarving #greenwoodworking #socialengagement #contemporaryart #adayinthepark #dialogicalaesthetics #contemporarycraft

The Decency Project returns to the Colorado School of Mines all this week, for critical conversations with scientists and engineers. We’re going to carve together and ponder how we can share the rock we stand upon. #thedecencyproject #allegoryofthespoons #socialpractice #socialpracticeart #spooncarving #greenwoodworking #socialengagement #contemporaryart #adayinthepark #dialogicalaesthetics #contemporarycraft

Posted @withregram@iaahillyer This Second Saturday at Hillyer! The Decency Project: A Workshop by Scott Braun Saturday, September 9, 1 p.m. REGISTRATION ENCOURAGED (Limited seats are available) “The Decency Project” is an ongoing participatory work by interdisciplinary artist Scott Braun, forming connection and conversation through shared labor. Seeking a bond between people of unlike mind, culture, or lived experience, he teaches strangers to carve a spoon while having a conversation embracing conceptual and critical thinking. This dialogue is not about contemporary politics, but instead about abstracted ideals, our abilities to coexist despite our differences. Participants question what it means to be a human: What must I do? What must I not do? The workshop is organized in conjunction with Mark Tan’s exhibition “Sight Unseen.” Due to limited space, reservations are recommended: athillyer.org/second-saturdays/ —— Hillyer is funded in part by @thedcarts , the @neaarts , the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Galena Yorktown Foundation, and the Jon and Mary Shirley Foundation. #athillyer #hillyer #hillyerartgallery #dcartgallery #acreativedc #dupontcircle #experienceDC #dcartscene #washingtondc #igdc #artdc #contemporaryart #contemporaryartists #artoftheday #artexhibitions #soloshow #groupexhibition #regionalartists #nationalartists #localcurator #marktan #sightunseen #identity #migration #displacement #firstgenerationimmigrant #woodworking #migrantlaborworkforce #time #thedecencyproject @suapyg @nintando
