Umi Says: A group exhibition at Chromophore Artspace featuring Virginia-based women artists with work that speaks to themes of motherhood, generational bonds, ancestral wisdom, and memory.

This show feels timely in the wake of the recent uptick in violence against Black women and children. It seeks to hold space for witnessing, care, and protection, while centering the voices of those who are often overlooked or endangered.
The word Umi is Arabic for “my mother,” and shares the same root as ummah, meaning nation or community. This reminds us that care extends beyond the individual, and shapes the collective.
This show holds space for artists who are mothers and daughters—especially those whose creative practices have been paused or reshaped through the labor of caregiving. The work reflects the tension and tenderness of holding both: creation and responsibility, self and service.
It also honors the ways Black women have always created. Forms like weaving, textiles, quilting, and collage bridge the gap between function and expression. These practices have carried narratives of history, culture, and survival, even as they’ve been sidelined or undervalued in conversations around fine art.
Umi Says examines what is passed down, what is held in the body, what is stitched, painted, assembled, and remembered.

As an interior designer, art curation is central to my design process. I'm inspired by art, collect art, and believe passionately in supporting artists.
The Marble Moon Lounge is a creative collaboration between myself, @cronehouserva , and @richexperiences_ . Together we built a collection that spans nearly every medium — ceramic, glass, fiber, collage, wood, and painting — each piece chosen with intention and in conversation with the next. So much of the art you see here has roots in Richmond — a vibrant creative ecosystem in the South. This room is a love letter to that. Living with art isn't a luxury. It's a necessity.

Acrylic/Markers, Reclaimed Beads, Finger knit hair on Cotton Canvas Cotton tapestry of interwoven, connected symbiotic systems, drawing upon primordial life forms, merging weaving into patterns of repetition, ritual, and order, echoing the cyclical nature of perceived reality. As above, so below reminds the viewer that there is comfort sitting with stillness admist chaos and destruction. This uncontained vessel embodies alchemy and great transformation through intention rejecting completness. Grief and loss permeate this piece, imprinted through colour, and the lack thereof, as a balancing act between darkness and light. In cohesion, this polarity represents resistance against erasure of self in darkness and a reclamation of peace through intuitive introspection of ones inner world, the vessel of ancestral knowledge.
