In Why We Make, spanning two floors and featuring over 500 objects from 60 nations, lighting helps shape a journey through creativity. Working alongside @ja__projects and @apracticeforeverydaylife , we developed a system inspired by East London’s streets and markets - using illuminated signage, light boxes and dynamic titles to guide visitors through a series of “neighbourhoods.”
Each object is individually considered, with lighting responding to its materiality, scale and conservation needs - from intimate moments to a broader reading of the collection as a whole. Be that the stunning Molly Goddard pink dress that greets you as you enter the gallery with it’s discreet showcase lighting allowing the object an immediacy and energy to the cardboard model of Derek Jarman’s opera sets, where the lighting encourages close up intimate viewing. The result is a layered, fluid environment that celebrates making, process and cultural connection.

Studio ZNA is proud to have delivered the lighting design for the Why We Make permanent galleries and front of house spaces at the new @vam_east , which opened its doors the public on 18 April at Stratford Waterfront. The museum is a key part of East Bank, the mayor of London’s £1.1bn cultural and education quarter designed to transform the former Olympic boroughs.
Our approach centres on using light to create a sense of welcome, dissolving thresholds between public realm and gallery spaces - so visitors feel like participants, not just observers in this new social space.

From the sublime light and shadow of Zurbaran followed by elemental Mexico City - researching for a current project. Beyond inspiring and somehow seeing connections. Light, darkness, humanity.
It was an honour to light this incredible exhibition at the National Gallery. ‘Zurbarán’ brings together over 40 works spanning visionary Spanish Painter Francisco de Zurbarán’s career.
The strong light and deep shadows bring intensity to the paintings ranging from monumental altar pieces to focused still lives.
Open to the public now until the 23rd August.
Congratulations to the team @nationalgallery

We are so looking forward to the opening of the V&A East museum after 4 years of collaborative work lighting galleries, retail spaces and all public realm areas. So excited to share this new social cultural space which is designed to support a sense of welcoming and accessibility. Studio ZNA worked with the designers' spatial and scenographic concepts. Light was used to create vistas that entice and dissolve thresholds so that all public spaces between circulation lobbies to collection and display feel fluid and open.
After months of working together on site the team is excited to celebrate tonight at the preview, an exciting start to a week of events in preparation for the opening weekend.

The warm immersive Perfume offers a unique experience. The concealed ceiling cove delivers a soft ambient warm glow, reflecting light into the richly textured faux fur walls. Objects are illuminated using integrated light sheets, lending each perfume bottle a subtle, luminous transparency. Discreet linear lighting within frames ensures the 2D works are viewed equally alongside the objects while maintaining a clean, uncluttered ceiling plane.
The darker, high contrast space of Bijoux houses a collection of exquisite buttons. A recessed overhead lightbox forms a central shaft of light, both anchoring the space and evenly illuminating the display below.

At a more intimate scale, slow-moving highlights trace the micro-details of garments, buttons, embroidery and intricate craftsmanship. This ensures each piece is experienced with clarity, depth and quiet emphasis. We used the moments of hyperfocus to create a suggestion of a camera iris opening and closing self consciously to zoom in and out from form to detail referencing work with Schiaparelli collaborators such as Man Ray and Horst P. Horst.

Studio ZNA had the privilege of lighting the first exhibition on Elsa Schiaparelli spanning the 1920s to today, celebrating the innovative designer’s influence. It traces the fashion house’s groundbreaking origins and its evolution under current creative director Daniel Roseberry.
In one of the first introductions to Daniel Roseberry’s work we created a dynamic lighting sequence, synchronised with the score. It brings theatrical rhythm and colour, culminating in a dramatic showcase of Daniel Roseberry’s contemporary designs. The objects are viewed under changing lighting conditions to appreciate all the different details of the garments. It softly transitions from a cool to a gold top light before transitioning into a front spotlights that pans across the dresses creating silhouettes on the back wall. The scenes are supported by an amber wall wash that fades in and out, resonating with the colours of the Maison.
