We visited a sorting facility and saw what happens to clothes placed in textile bins. As the owner said, “Through organising chaos, we are creating value.”
Sorted by hand, the items enter a global system and are sold by weight and condition. The best pieces stay in Europe, while others are sent to places like Pakistan or Ghana. Seeing single shoes, dirty garments, and torn fabrics still being sold, not given away, challenges the idea that we are simply “donating.”
Someone else may still find value in what you throw away, so it matters how we treat our clothes and shoes. Think before you buy, repair what you can, and if you discard something, make sure it is clean.Â
The scale becomes even more eye-opening when you realise that some items, especially from fast-fashion brands, arrive with cut-out labels, barely worn or completely new with price tags still on, yet are already treated as waste. As the owner said, “garbage.” Low quality, mixed materials, and a high share of synthetic fibres show how quickly value disappears, turning resources into waste at scale.
Made for Motion Manipulation 2025.
This series of jackets combines patchworked discarded shirts with pleating techniques developed in collaboration with an Italian factory. It explores an effective method for polyester upcycling and designs that move with the body.
