Studio Samira Boon designed and produced a 3D textile facade for the @hermes Qiantan Taikoo Li store in Shanghai, China. The adaptive architecture changes the sound, light, and space that customers experience, as well as enhancing the brand’s sense of luxury. While being progressively transparent towards the sky to let natural daylight in, the gradient of denser weavings and folds mantles the clients in serene privacy.
This project was commissioned by the Parisian architecture firm @rdai_ensemble , who is responsible for the interior design of Hermès worldwide. Swipe to see the details of the 3D textile facade.

“(…) I always get the feeling as if I’m walking through a visual art work, while at the same time it is a very functional space.” Rob van Steen, director Theaters Tilburg.
A next step into a more flexible architecture; ARCHI FOLDS are transformable objects, using in- and unfolding qualities to customise spaces.
Commissioned by Theatres Tilburg, we used ARCHI FOLDS to re-design their Audax room, creating a dynamic, flexible, and eye-catching environment. The new design makes it possible to use the room for both small and big events.

Kombucha, more than just a tea?
Studio Samira Boon is developing bacteria-grown textiles based on fermented Kombucha tea. Through research and sampling, we can learn how this culture of bacteria interacts with other species.
The result? A 100% biodegradable material that is alive, regenerative, and interacts with our environment. Not only can KOMBUTEX create a sustainable and biodiverse interior element, but it can also act as a substitute for leather, plastic, or paper.

Mitt Jag (My Me) celebrates the beauty in our differences and inspires a positive self-image.
Through movement and flowing, malleable fabrics, dancers create a sculptural world, inviting us on a journey of imagination, creativity, and joy.
This transformative performance encourages us to appreciate ourselves and others just as we are.

Textile installations serve a multitude of purposes. For the Audax room at Theatres Tilburg, our goal was to create a dynamic and flexible environment, with an 'open infrastructure' that acts as an eye-catching representation of the theatre's cultural program. The moving and adaptable elements seamlessly adjusts capacity, maximising the room's potential.

Translucency is something we experiment with a lot at the studio. These yarns offer a sustainable solution for spaces that require adaptable, energy-efficient elements.
Their ability to regulate natural light and enhance the visual quality of a room is unmatched. This material is able to interact with light in unique ways, diffusing it softly and creating a warm, ethereal glow that transforms the atmosphere. By integrating translucent yarns into architecture and design, we can create more environmentally conscious spaces.

For many years now, our collaboration with @textielmuseum has helped us test the boundaries of textile designs and structures, bringing innovation and creativity to our work.
We draw inspiration from nature: shapes, mechanisms and structures. Those found in plants have been subsequently reinterpreted into mathematical translations-inspired by the craft of origami artists.

The Di Yuan Gallery in Jiaxing, China, commissioned our studio to create ten 5-meter-high textile sun-shading installations for their auditorium.
The southern orientation of the jagged, rhythmic façade made the sunlight regulation a special challenge, which is how the idea for an adaptable art piece was born. Each panel can be turned and twisted into distinct configurations, filtering or obscuring daylight in various ways while adapting to the changing light conditions throughout the day and across the seasons.
