What do characters want?
Snacks, obviously.
Iâm teaching: On Dastardly Rats, Cephalopods, and Other Characters Great and Small, a playful workshop on character-led storytelling for children.
Through drawing and guided exercises, weâll explore how shape, gesture, and small visual decisions can suggest a whole inner lifeâand what happens when a character gets hungry.
Bring a few characters whoâve been living in your drawer, sketchbook, or quietly shelved project. Weâll tease them out, set them in motion, and see what trouble they get into.
One or two of them may already be carrying a story.

Huge thanks to the community of readers in Hudson, and to the @hudson_cbf board for such a wonderful weekend celebrating reading and storytelling.
It was a joy to see my poster out in the wild, spend time with so many thoughtful, generous creators (and swipe a few photosâthank you K.E. and Lynnor), share a morning with some very clever 4th and 5th graders at MC Smith Elementary School, chat with authors, a librarian, and a young volunteer for a podcast (!), and eat extremely well.
Phew. What a weekend. Iâm off to sleep for a week.

We are so excited to begin sharing the list of fabulous authors and illustrators that will be joining us at the 15th annual Hudson Children's Book Festival! First up is the great Isabel Roxas, the creator of this year's poster and social media templates! Here are some fun facts about her:
1. I always trip myself while walking.
2. I canât resist a crane claw machine. Even though I am absolutely terrible at playing it and have NEVER won a toy, I am forever hopeful.
3. I enjoy collecting facts about pigeons. Did you know? It is a misconception that they dirty animals. They actually like to groom themselves and bathe often, especially during the summer months.

I am very excited to share my poster for the HUDSON CHILDRENâS BOOK FESTIVAL!
It has been a really rough winter--personally, in the world, and weather-wise-- so I wanted to create a scene that you could snuggle into. "Huddle close, have I got a story for you," says the ladybug...or something like that.
The story the little ladybug is describing is a tribute to one of Leo Lionniâs most beloved storytellers, can you tell me his name? (Hint: he has very big ears)
If you are in the area in May, do stop by! It's a smorgasbord of talent-- come say hello, then reward yourself with a fancy sandwich or craft brew in town!
