Shedding Light on the ‘Kalbas’! ✨
Like many, Sanne was inspired by our island and the potential of the Kalbas (Calabash)—a fruit that has been used for centuries in countless ways on Curacao. Its unique shape and material sparked the beginning of our collaboration!
Together with @studiopluis (NL), we’re sharing knowledge and skills from two different backgrounds and environments to create something new. While Sanne experiments in the Netherlands with our input, we’re focused on building a sustainable production chain right here on the island. 🌿💡

🌾🌿 Natural (plant) fibres and materials are literally up for grabs almost everywhere; often they are considered worthless because of their apparent lack of value. Think of pruning the garden or, as I saw in Curaçao, palm tree leaves and empty coconuts. Materials such as kapok, Katoena di Seda and other natural fibers are also included.
Previous trips 🌎 for my work with wool (felt) brought me into contact with shepherds who taught me that many were told that their wool was worthless. A similar story applies to various natural plant fibers. Statements like “The best kapok is elsewhere” or “Your land is no good, your crops are bad” are used to devalue people, animals and plants simply because they do not seem to meet an imaginary standard or because they do not fit within modern trends or ‘industrial efficiency’.
Each fibre, whether it is wool, kapok or sansevieria, carries unique properties, often perfectly tailored to the landscape in which they grow. This unique character cannot be captured in a ‘one size fits all’ formula. Instead of aiming for efficiency alone, we should look at coordination with the environment, residents and the intended need and use.
Converting large-scale industrial techniques to smaller-scale, local processes and appropriate methods can be an avenue to value and utilize these materials. Just as I have seen before, even in Curaçao, natural fibres are sometimes almost apologetically presented, even though they are beautiful and fantastic to work with! 🥰🌿🪄& so the journey continues, full of opportunities to discover and use these materials. @farmtocrafts

@farmtocrafts streeft ernaar zelfvoorzienendheid van Curaçao te versterken door nieuwe ecosystemen te creëren die sociale, ecologische en culturele sectoren verbinden. Op dit moment is Curaçao voor meer dan 95% afhankelijk van export.
In het verleden werden de natuurlijke bronnen uitgebuit tijdens de koloniale periode. Ook heeft deze periode grote impact gehad op het verliezen van oude inheemse kennis.
Farm to Crafts draagt bij aan begrip en verbinding middels dialoog & ‘learning by doing’ door samen te leren en hernieuwde landbouw - en productieprocessen te ontwikkelen.
Als ontwerpend kunstenaar geef ik vorm aan de omgeving om mij heen vanuit onderzoek naar het landschap. Ik sta midden in het gebied en observeer met al mijn zintuigen. Met alle entiteiten- van flora tot fauna - ga ik de dialoog aan. Het is de plaats waar ik werk en kennis oogst.
Samen deelde we kennis en onderzochten het landschap.

In the past, the natural resources were exploited during the colonial period. This period also had a major impact on the loss of old indigenous knowledge.
Farm to Crafts contributes to understanding and connection through dialogue & ‘learning by doing’ by learning together and developing renewed agricultural and production processes.
As a desiging artist, I make sense of the environment around me by exploring the landscape. I stand in the middle of the terrain, taking in everything with heightend senses. And I begin a dialogue, from flora to fauna, with all the beings present. The landscape is not merely where I work, it’s the place I go to gather knowledge.
Nog steeds vol van de reis op uitnodiging van @farmtocrafts afgelopen november. Tijdens mijn tijd op Curaçao deelde ik m’n passie voor (plant)vezels en needle felting via de lezing ‘ Vezels & Landschappen, vormgeven vanuit de kern’, gevolgd door workshops waar we lokale plant vezels en mogelijke toepassingen onderzochten.
Maar wat deze reis echt onvergetelijk maakte, was de connectie met de mensen en het verkennen van het gelaagde landschap.

Still filled with the memories of the journey invited by Farm to Crafts last November. During my stay, I shared my passion for needle felting and (plant)fibres trough the lecture ‘Fibres & Landscapes, shaping from the core’, followed by an workshops exploring the local fibres and how to use them. But what truly made this experience unforgettable was the connecting with wonderful people and exploring the layered landscapes. Thanks to all the ladies who joined the workshops & the wonderful Farm to Crafts team!

‘ Werkperiode Sanne Muiser | Op dit moment is Sanne Muiser volop bezig met haar werkperiode bij Witte Rook in de StadsGalerij. Sanne is de oprichter van Studio Pluis te Eindhoven, die is ontstaan vanuit de fascinatie voor de vezel; het pluisje. Een aanraking kan een pluis veranderen van vorm en er is veel van nodig om een oppervlak of een textiel te creëren. Pluis is overal, in een hoekje op straat, op de heide, op de huid, in je huis, op het aanrecht en in je bed. Sanne’s praktijk bevindt zich op de scheidslijn tussen kunst, vormgeving en onderzoek en ze heeft deze de afgelopen jaren verdiept door de bron van het materiaal te onderzoeken. Tijdens een opleiding tot herder heeft ze de relatie tussen het schaap en de wol kunnen onderzoeken.
Tijdens haar werkperiode werkt Sanne aan het project met als werktitel Vezels & Landschappen vormgeven vanuit de kern, waarin ze opzoek gaat naar hoe ze het onderzoek naar materiaal kan laten terugkomen in de vorm van haar werk. Bij Witte Rook krijgt ze de tijd en ruimte om het experiment aan te gaan met haar materiaal van wolvilt, gemaakt van de wol van schapen van haar eigen kudde. Haar werkperiode is gericht op de beeldende aspecten van het materiaal en hoe dit zich verhoudt met de monumentale ruimte van de StadsGalerij.
Gedurende een half jaar gaat Sanne op diverse momenten het gesprek aan met conservator Marjolein van de Ven (Stedelijk Museum Breda), curator, schrijver en redacteur Masha van Vliet (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) en schrijver, onderzoeker en artistiek leider Esther van Rosmalen (Witte Rook) met opzoek te gaan naar dat deel van haar praktijk waar onderzoek en toepassing elkaar kruisen.
Deze werkperiode is onderdeel van haar onderzoek dat gerealiseerd kan worden dankzij een bijdrage van het Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. ‘

' Als ontwerper geef ik vorm vanuit onderzoek naar de oorsprong van een materiaal en zintuiglijkheid. Met mijn onderzoek zoek ik ook de praktijk op, zo volgde ik tot vorig jaar de opleiding tot herder om de relatie tussen schaap en wol beter te begrijpen. Het leverde mij bovendien belangrijke inzichten over de totstandkoming van het Nederlands landschap. Dit heeft mijn visie op wol en haar toepassing gevormd.
Door actief de praktijk op te zoeken vind je andere inzichten als waar je voor komt. Met dank aan deze benadering onderscheidt mijn onderzoek en visie zich en krijgt mijn werk verdieping. '

' As a designer, I start giving shape by doing research into the origin of a material and sensoriality. With my research I also seek practical experience, for example until last year I followed the training to become a shepherd in order for a better understanding between the relationship sheep and wool.
It also provided me with important insights into the development of the Dutch landscape. This has shaped my vision of wool and its use.
By actively standing in the field, researching by doing, you will find different insights than what you came for. Thanks to this approach, my research and vision stand out and my work gains depth.
