The books that made it vs the books that still need to get home and the prep it takes to be ready for that....of you see me looking extra 😍😍😍 at @jorizvl these days, this is why.....
(For the record, as a huge fan of @kooyman.curacao
, this was such a disappointing adventure...we waited for Ascension day to do our shopping for this project and it was underwhelming in all ways possible. Do better...and that goes double for you @funmiles !)
#diy #booklover
Most people know me barefoot or in flip flops, even deep in winter shlepping the kliko to the curb....
And most of my #shoecollection is functional, must admit, but there are some fun ones in there!

We did it, Curaçao!!! 🇨🇼
You may have noticed things went quiet after the bioblitz weekend — but behind the scenes, a LOT has been happening….
For the past 10 days, 300+ validators from across the @inaturalistorg community have worked non-stop to bring every observation to research grade.
The results are in: 82.68% of our 9,000+ observations reached research grade, and together we documented 1,000+ species across the island 🐦🌵🐠
An incredible snapshot of Curaçao’s biodiversity, captured by you…..observers, identifiers, masterclass-goers, kids with their parent’s phones, retirees with sharp eyes, and everyone in between.
Tomorrow the official worldwide CNC rankings drop, and we’re feeling very good about where Curaçao lands on the global leaderboard 👀✨
So come celebrate with us!
📅 Tuesday, May 19 | 🕔 5:00 – 7:00 PM
📍 Marie Pompoen
🥂 Drinks on us — RSVP to the CNC team please!
Have a drink, take a breath, and toast everything you made possible. Every single observation mattered.
Masha danki 💚

The City Nature Challenge Curaçao was a week ago already! And while we are quiet, behind the scenes we are working hard te elevate all the collected data to research level. Identifying species and confirming the ID work of others is what makes this citizen science project a world wide event.
We have 5 more days to go,the deadline for ID and validation is midnight on May 10th.
Help us with the last 3500 observations! Check your messages in iNaturalist and reach out if you are stuck.
Thank you to all the people that have been working non stop behind the scenes, we have double the number of observers doing Id work now!

We’re nearing 1,000 species documented on Curaçao during this year’s @citynaturechallengecuracao !!🌵🐝
Took photos this weekend (April 24–27)? It’s not too late! You have until May 10 to upload to @inaturalistorg — and yours could be the observation that gets us across the line.
Didn’t get out with a camera but still want to help? You can ID and validate observations that others have already uploaded. DM us and we’ll show you how — every set of eyes counts 👀
This is what citizen science looks like: an entire island documenting itself, one photo at a time. Let’s finish strong!!!

One night and one day left! 🌿
Tomorrow is the LAST day of the @citynaturechallengecuracao 2026 — and we want YOU out there with us, Curaçao! 🇨🇼
Whether you're 7 or 107, in your backyard, on a hike, at the beach, or walking to the supermarket — every plant, bird, lizard, insect, or fish you spot counts.
This is community science at its best, and Curaçao is on the map alongside cities all over the world 🌍
How to join (it's easy!):
1️⃣ Download the free @inaturalistorg app 📱
2️⃣ Step outside — anywhere on the island 🌳
3️⃣ Snap a photo of any wild plant or animal you see 📸
4️⃣ Upload it to @inaturalistorg — that's it!
The app even helps identify what you've found. Bring the kids, bring your oma, bring your neighbors — every observation makes Curaçao's biodiversity more visible to scientists and decision-makers 💚
⏰ You have until end of day Monday, April 27 to make your observations count.
Let's finish strong, Kòrsou! 🦎🌺🐠

At midnight we @citynaturechallengecuracao start! And even thoughwe live that so many people are joining our hikes, nature is everywhere around us.
It takes 30 seconds to be a part of this event, and a scientist never sees what you see in and around your own home.
So join us, even for one observation!

Tomorrow is Earth Day! As a city dweller, I spend a lot of time in a very urban and landscaped environment. On my walk yesterday, I found some examples of "wild" nature that count for City Nature Challenge this weekend.
Come practice tomorrow with the @kayakayafestival Earth Day Bioblitz!

🌿 Meet Anna Rojer — biologist and one of Curaçao's original nature activists — has spent a lifetime teaching generations about the island's incredible terrestrial biodiversity and helping to protect the landscapes that hold it.
Christoffel National Park. Malpais. And so many others you've likely haven't heard of (yet!).
A morning hike with Anna is a masterclass — not just in the plants and animals of Curaçao, but in what it actually takes to protect a place.
The meetings. The letters. The years of showing up. The community you build around a piece of land before anyone else notices it's worth saving.
💬 "You cannot protect your nature if you don't have your people behind you."
That's the line that stays with you.
Because Anna has spent a career proving it. The science matters. The maps matter. But none of it protects anything unless a community decides, together, that it's worth protecting.
Her life's work is a reminder that the nature of Curaçao isn't only in its iconic species — it's in the small, overlooked plants at the edge of the road, in the seedlings pushing past the goats, and in the quiet but stubborn people who've refused to let them disappear.
How to join CNC Curaçao (April 24–27):
1️⃣ Download iNaturalist
2️⃣ Create an account
3️⃣ Observe April 24–27
Join us on one of the guided hikes or explore on your own. Take photos of any wild plants, animals, or fungi you find, and upload your observations — every sighting counts!
The "Curaçao Nature Pioneers" series is created by @katjanacabenda (filmmaking) and @internetofnature_ (storytelling).

Field Note 14 drops tomorrow 🌿
This Friday to Monday, April 24-27, hundreds of thousands of people around the world will step outside with their phones and photograph/record whatever is alive around them.
Plants. Birds. Lizards. Fungi. A spider in the garden. A weed in the sidewalk crack.
It's called the City Nature Challenge, and it's the largest coordinated biodiversity survey on Earth.
Last April, during CNC's 10th anniversary, a marine biology student in India photographed a translucent sea slug that hadn't been seen since Queen Victoria was on the throne.
A woman in Salt Lake City logged the first-ever iNaturalist upload of a species no one had thought to document.
A diver in South Australia caught a leafy sea dragon hauling his eggs through the kelp.
Field Note 14 is about what happens when ordinary people pay attention — and why I think it's producing the most valuable biodiversity data of the year.
Link in bio to subscribe. Drops tomorrow!
And if you're in Curaçao: come find us April 24–27 at @citynaturechallengecuracao 💚 we've got free, guided hikes and bioblitzes planned!
Not in Curaçao? See citynaturechallenge.org to see if your city is participating!
