The ADA accessible door to the CFA building is the closest to the ‘Fine Arts Parking Lot’ which can be found on Google Maps. Take the ramp from the Fine Arts Parking Lot. It leads to a button operated automated door. The door opens to a hallway, turn right out of the hallway to arrive at the elevator. To get to the STUDIO take the elevator to Floor 1. The STUDIO’s accessible door is currently CMU ID card operated. And we have a doorbell for non-card holders. Once inside the door, the accessibility lift opens outward to the right, and is operated by a black toggle switch (pressing down to move down and up to move up.)

June 3rd 2026 at 5PM in the Simmons Auditorium, the STUDIO's Associate Director Dr. Harrison Apple will deliver the 2026 @carnegiemellon Pride Month Keynote Lecture followed by a discussion and Q&A moderated by their collaborator in culture and history @sweet_thunda Bekezela Mguni of the @blackunicornlibraryproject
Dr. Apple will talk about their research to highlight community knowledge about LGBTQ social history in Pittsburgh and its transformation into a dynamic and experimental community archivist practice, The Pittsburgh Queer History Project.
Apple began their life in Pittsburgh at Carnegie Mellon as a @cmuschoolofart / @cmu_bxa undergraduate of fine art and global studies @cmu_dietrichhss Their impact through scholastic/creative work has only been possible with support for research at the @cmucfa including from the STUDIO and the @centerforartandsociety

Brand told Alberte Pagán for A Cuarta Parede, “You know, I preserved that film recently, and I can’t figure out how I made it. I don’t remember. I didn’t yet have my own optical printer—I think I used the one at Pittsburgh Filmmakers—it must’ve been an aerial image optical printer where I could keep the film still while advancing the matte. This way the circle mattes change every frame, but the image of the students is step printed with every fourth frame repeated four times emphasizing that the moving image too is a series of stills. It’s very funny to be the archivist of my own films.”

Then: Did you know the stretch of Nine Mile Run between Commercial Street and Duck Hollow may have been buried underground if it weren’t for artists? When artists Bob Bingham, Tim Collins, and Reiko Goto caught wind of the City’s plan to culvert the stream to make way for a housing development back in the 90s, they took action!
Why it matters: Through tours, workshops, and even an exhibition on the slag heaps (steel waste piles), these visionaries engaged hundreds of people over four years, eventually leading to the restoration of the stream. They were voices for the stream and for future generations of wildlife and people who live and recreate here today. Learn more about this project here: /project/nine-mile-run-greenway-project

Last year, we held a workshop with @shiftworkspgh for local artists to help guide our restoration of Fern Hollow stream. Their recommendations will make this section of Frick Park a more accessible and engaging place while preserving the ecosystem.
This April, we’re sending our fans on a scavenger hunt! We’ve teamed up with local artist @ang.e.b.pottery to create 25 ceramic trinkets that celebrate our local native species. The CFA is launching a month-long residency (June 2026) for up to 3 faculty to develop educational tools that bring generative AI into arts teaching. Selected residents receive $10,500 each, to provide summer support, RA support, materials, workspace at the STUDIO, and documentation resources. Tools are published open-source.

Poet Bertony Louis will explore how personal experience, grief, and the Haitian
experience have shaped his poetic voice. He will share poems written here in
Pittsburgh, as well as selections from his poetry collection Recovering the Horizons. Conversation and reflection will be facilitated by poet Sony Ton-Aime, executive director of Pittsburgh Arts and Lectures.
