Repost from @copenhagen_contemporary - The installation Mercurial (2024) by the Korean artist and electronic music composer Yunchul Kim unfolds like a duet in midair. Two silver ballerinas seem to dance in slow suspension, their quiet resonance recalling the hush of a breeze ruffling yellow-orange autumn leaves. Kim’s dual practice as both contemporary artist and sound composer becomes tangible – if not visible – in these kinetic sculptures, where sound deepens the sensory and emotional encounter. At first glance the two forms appear perfectly balanced, echoing one another in movement and in sound. Yet the work resists stillness. Each shimmering bundle shifts with unpredictable grace, never settling into repetition, forever remaking its own rhythm – like dancers guided by the architecture of sound rather than by any fixed choreography. #yunchulkim #studio_locus_solus #mercurial

Yunchul Kim (b.1970) | #transmattereal #installation #locossolus Working in installations, drawings, sound, texts, and other media, Kim blends math, science, technology, music, philosophy, poetry, and cosmology into his practice to unravel a universe of material entanglements, articulating various metaphysical sites of fluid encounters among things, including nonhuman matter. Kim’s work embodies the material world imagined by the artist, telling a story of a dimension before humans formed cultures or were defined by language. His works, in which humans, non-humans, machines, materials, and substances are considered equal, exist as a “non-human agency” and “initiating agent,” as the subject of imperceptible events. Kim’s unique ‘TransMattereal’ work has been recognized with the 2016 Collide International Award (CERN) along with awards at Ars Electronica, Transmediale, and VIDA 15.0, among others. A member of collaborative research projects as well such as Mattereality (KIAS, Leader, Korea), Liquid Things (Univ. of Applied Arts, Vienna) and Fluid Skies, he has exhibited his work, most recently, at Yokohama Triennale, Japan (2020), KUMU, Estonia (2020), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan (2020), iMAL, Belgium (2020), CCCB, Spain (2019) and ZKM, Germany (2018); other international venues where he showed his work include Venice Biennale, Italy; International Triennial of New Media Art, China; ISEA, Germany; VIDA15.0, Spain; FACT, UK; and New York Digital Salon, USA, among others.
