Slop Clop Gurgle Gloop: Collaboration with artist Laura Robertson. First installed at Underland Passages (@laurarobertsonart + @erikac_art ) as part of Art Week Exeter 2023 & the foot sinks into it (@laurarobertsonart + @laingtateart + @erikac_art ) at The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington. Subsequently released as a limited edition USB drive. Originally created for installation underground, Slop Clop Gurgle Gloop is a 31 minute audio piece made from sounds of slime & the human body interacting with it. The material of slime is given a voice via physical manipulation and sonic processing, developing over the length of the composition. Themes of subterranea, fluid geology, deep time & abject matter are central to the work. 4 audio clips are presented here. Weather Sound System (Unrealised): Commission for the creation of a sound design system to match the visuals of a reactive, animated website logo. The changing appearance and movement of the logo was dictated by live weather data from the site of a building. Sounds were to represent various weather parameters, matched to visual counterparts in the animated logo. Emphasis was on the audio being fluid, organic & calming — appropriate for the activities taking place in the building. A rigorous audio programme was formulated for the client. Weather conditions are divided into temperature, precipitaion, wind speed, tide, time of day & season. Each parameter is represented by an individual looping sound, in addition to being a method of processing or arranging all sounds together as a whole. This was necessary due to the mix of discrete & continuous data in effect, in addition to the requirement of articulating interaction between weather variables. A naturalistic approach was taken for designing the sounds themselves. Some are reminiscent of real objects — the hoot of an owl signalling a night cycle, watery sounds to represent rain; others are more abstract motifs denoting certain climactic events — particles blown by wind, the ebb and flow of tide. Two different scenarios are presented here, demonstrating the concept: [1] Night, Winter, No Rain, Cold, High Wind, Low Tide [2] Day, Summer, Warm, Raining, No Wind, High Tide A text document with a comprehensive breakdown and explanation of the parameters was created alongside the audio. Rake Klappen Sound Logo: Sonic ident for Dutch theatre group @rakeklappen (literal translation – ‘Hard Blows’). Producing works of physical theatre for all ages, the group explore philosophical themes through the language of the body. Acrobatics, humour and poetic imagery are all hallmarks of a Rake Klappen performance. The jingle was produced to accompany digital content and establish a sonic brand for the troupe. The creation needed to be exciting, vibrant & memorable. A barrage of handclaps creates momentum & evokes the pure physicality of Rake Klappen theatre, a mallet arpeggio adding an element of playfulness. The sound logo ends with a bold tube-like tone reminiscent of the simplistic & unadorned yet charming materials often used for the group’s set design. Traversal: Sound work created from recordings taken whilst walking in rural south west England. Full piece initially aired as part of @radiophreniaglasgow 2023, a temporary art radio station broadcast from the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow (@cca_glasgow ). Subsequently aired on @soundartradio . Run time: 13 min. Navigating forests, moors, meadows & coastlines, the audio encompasses transit in all weathers — from the fog of Dartmoor to a sunny southern beach. The rhythm of footsteps takes the foreground, providing a steady & comforting cadence. Alongside the sound of the human, the environment itself emerges: grass, stones, water, wind. Traversal offers a moment to enter a state of mindfulness, supplies a brief escape into the wilderness — or, is simply an opportunity to experience the sound of the landscape. Le jeu/Het spel: Soundtrack created for short documentary film Le jeu/Het spel by Mariëlla van Appeldoorn. The film follows Dutch theatre group @rakeklappen on an excursion to France – in August 2020 the troupe set off to Aubenton for a week of experimentation & exploration, culminating in a performance for local residents. The music for intro & credits is composed for acoustic instrumentation and was made to encapsulate the sound of a warm, slow summer. The movement scenes, seen here, are soundtracked less traditionally. An outdoor games scene is accompanied by light tones & playful harmonies; once indoors, the mood intensifies – reactive drumming & tuned woodblocks add an element of tension to the footage. NHS Advertisement: Bespoke music for the National Health Service, created for an advert inspiring nurses around the world to relocate to the UK & join the NHS. As the largest employer in Europe, the UK’s medical institution celebrates it’s diversity and collective talent, with workers of 200 different nationalities coming together to care for the country. An uplifting, evocative piece was required to match the visuals & story. The outcome is a dreamlike yet rousing track, inspired by shoegaze & post-rock. Celestial chimes, synthetic choir & guitar make for a transcendent atmosphere.
