🟠 Glass artist and co-author of “Trick Glasses: Devious Drinking Devices”, Marc Barreda @studio_barreda arrives in Finland to teach the history and techniques of traditional trick glasses in Nuutajärvi’s new hotshop. Trick glasses are designed to surprise, confuse, and amuse the drinker. Originating between the 16th and 18th centuries, these playful objects sparked laughter and connection. Now, their spirit returns to the hotshop as participants create their own contemporary interpretations. “I’m continually baffled by the skills of the glassmakers who came before us—and by how trick pieces and jokes reveal the synergy that emerged when cultures, techniques, and humor collided in glasshouses. Teaching around the world allows me to experience that same synergy again and again”, says Barreda. Learn more via the link in bio @nuutajarven_lasi and secure your spot for an inspiring week of hot glass, creative exchange, and the brightness of the Finnish summer. 🟠 Deconstructing Devious Drinking Devices 📍 Nuutajärvi, Finland 🗓 28 July – 2 August 2026 ▪️Registration is open! 📷First photo: Marije Kuiper; Model: Doran Schmaal; Production: Hazazah Film & Photography

Disappearing tear catchers were made by replicating ancient Roman glass recipes to produce glass vessels that dissolve by interacting with the moisture in the air, water or in this case - my tears. Ancient glass was made of three basic ingredients: sand, fluxed with soda or ashes, and made more durable through the presence of lime. Within this triangle of materials, - the lack of stabilisers such as calcium/line makes glass soluble in water as it develops the tendency to ‘devitrify. Lacrimatories are Ancient Roman votive glass phials. According to their legend, which has since been archaeologically disproved, they were used as tear-catchers to collects the tears of the mourners. Once the tears evaporated the period of mourning was over. The project was produced in collaboration with @studio_barreda and is currently on view as part of my exhibition Cascade at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg @museumdermodernesalzburg #cascade #tears #dissolvingglass
