“And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”
– Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
We felt this deeply when the adrenaline finally wore off and our bodies gave way. The journey took more out of us than we realised, but we remain grateful for everything it taught us.
A week after the Bakawali returned from the exhibition, it bloomed, nearly ten flowers at once. We had hoped it might bloom during the show, but this felt like a quiet reminder: nature moves at its own time, and we are simply living alongside it.
We thank everyone who have helped to make the Bakawali films happen. It has truly been a special experience. Here’s a final call for those who have yet to see it, you can still catch the films on rawground.sg till 2 February!

Born in Taiping, Malaysia, @hongwho is a filmmaker and artist based in Singapore, and one-half of @studio1914 . Collaborating with Adzlynn, his research-led films explore Southeast Asian identities, folktales, and hidden histories that continue to shape contemporary life.
Working primarily with moving images, his practice often extends into site-specific installations, bringing intangible narratives into physical space through collaborations with artists and researchers across the region.
Selected works include MADU, RATU, and CIRCLE BETWEEN REALMS, exhibited at the National Museum of Singapore, Di-Antara Ruang in Yogyakarta, and ILHAM Art Show 2025. His recent films BAKAWALI: FORBIDDEN GARDEN and EVERYDAY GARDEN premiered during Singapore Art Week as a two-channel installation with quadraphonic sound.
At the core of his practice is an exploration of ecological wisdom, folktales, and unsettled histories as living guides for contemporary society.

What a whirlwind of a weekend it has been. Super appreciative of everyone who came out to support the films. Thank you for the energy, kindness, critique and passion. We will absorb it all to fuel the next iteration of Bakawali. There were so many little stories that we discovered along the way that we did not have the time to share with everyone. So, if you’d like to scrutinise the films a little more, you can watch them online from now till 2 February at rawground.sg
Pics 3-6: We also created a Bakawali Cosmology Map to share our interpretation of how the ‘Dunia (Earth)’, ‘Taman Larangan (Forbidden Garden)’ and ‘Kayangan (Heavenly Realm)’ planes are connected to each other. Enjoy!

These two animated films are presented in an installation setting, centred on the Bakawali, a night-blooming flower whose fleeting presence has inspired generations of stories.
Drawing from the Hikayat Gul-Bakawali, the works explore temporality, movement, and ecological relationships through animation by @studio1914 and sound by @gardikagigih

Two films unfold around the Bakawali:
a night-blooming flower shaped by myth and time.
Inspired by the Hikayat Gul-Bakawali, Bakawali di Taman Larangan (Forbidden Garden) and Bakawali di Dunia (Everyday Garden) invite viewers to slow down and think about time, movement, and our relationship to nature.

What happens when a flower becomes the main character?
Blooming at night, disappearing by morning, the Bakawali moves through myth, gardens, and time itself.
Two films. One fleeting bloom.
