Noella is a 23-year-old multimedia artist, born in Nigeria and raised in Glasgow.
“I’ve been drawing my whole life… painting for nearly 11 years. My work is dreamy and somewhat whimsical, a lot of it inspired by dreams I’ve had, and the music that’s enthralled me.”
Inspired by colour and nature’s beautiful offerings, and shaped by both religion and a reconnection with Noella’s own and global folklore, these influences run throughout her work - angels, divine figures, and natural elements appearing consistently.
These were the first pieces Noella created at Stüdio111, as a commission for London artist
@zoiyyya - forming the front and back cover of an upcoming album, to be released in CD form.
Some words from Noella:
“zoiyyya sent the reference picture of herself that i worked from, and the rest was entirely up to me creatively. i had a lot of fun with these pieces, though i was definitely very picky about them. one of the downsides of a semi-realistic art style is having to sit with unfinished work, knowing your final vision, and existing in that uncanny valley until it’s done.”
“i couldn’t help but think of the ocean when hearing her music… the tides will surely turn in her favour. i had the water coexisting harmoniously with greenery in a recurring spiral pattern that matches the back, which features both the sea and sky.
i love including spirals in my work - inspired by māori philosophy, they represent new life, growth, and peace. the shells represent harmony, creativity, patience, community, and endurance. with a starfish for good luck.”
“these were my first pieces created at studio111, so i wanted them to be something we could all be proud of. i got to know myself and my lovely, talented community so much better. there’s space for us all. There is a piece of me in all my work - i just hope you feel me, ya feel me?”
