for those of you who have also spent this wednesday deep in spreadsheets land, here is a palette cleanse in the form of a gothic winter romance… a forest of thorny quince branch and white pine, thistles and a snowy scattering of paper whites and french tulips, blood anemone and callas here and there. @juliavolphoto at @prospect_park picnic house with team @floralsbyalihadley @longweekendflorals @amandapantz

a few snippets of the tables this past weekend… third or fourth wedding in a row with all the bright colors… being really stretched into higher contrast from my natural gravitation to a gentle gradient. a favorite from last year. they say this app requires me to share multiple pictures in order for it to bother showing them to you. but I like this little moment in time, caught at a fun fall wedding. so uh, spot the difference? like those old puzzles at the back of magazines, where one shoe is blue and the other is green, do they still exist?

umbria… next door to tuscany but almost no tourists. land of tiny medieval cities, faro, farms, boars, truffles. perugia, with the steepest stairs winding up and an embroidery atelier in a twelfth century church. wild asparagus season, tiny shoots into pasta at every meal. beautiful l’alchemista (the artichoke soufflé and maybe the best strongozzi we had) in montefalco where all roads lead to the square; an incredibly cold and blustery morning in assissi (bless my father in law who wandered off and returned with a present of gloves!) but incredible crypts and also a cornetto; a visit to paolo bea where the architecture was nearly as beautiful as the wine. late night drives on curvy roads (and yes, once straight through a field). fell in love with tiny bevagna home to Roman sea monster murals and miniature la bottega di assu where we had a perfect lunch surrounded by books (and, as at every restaurant and also the plane and on the street, our baby was carried about). dragged the gang to lake trasmieno to join the families at faliero for torta al testo cooked on flames and stuffed with sausage and greens. gubbio, known to be magical and mystical. go round the fountain three times and turn into a madman (or drive through the forest to stay at the platonic ideal of an agriturismo, your child running free among the animals and hollering to new friends who don’t speak the same language, all huddled together in the stone farmhouse at night for homemade boar ragu and a shooting star on our way to bed).

Rome Rome Rome… a little trip to celebrate N’s birthday with the fam a few weeks ago. it’s the city I’ve returned to most, but first time in spring. sure, our favorite Caravaggio was packed, but pop across the street and fall in love with another. begin every day with two espressos, follow with an afternoon caffe ginseng (or two). ever a perfect lunch at piatto romano (wild herb salad with bread lemons, asparagus with wild strawberries !), then wander up the hill, cats still circling the pyramid. L running in circles in the orange garden. Into a church - oh wait the oldest in town. but also, over here — another! have I shown you my favorite? also the fountains! have some piazza bianca, a bit of mortadella; tiramisu at every meal.
