Serenity—Architecture in a High-Density Wildlife Corridor Pollachi, Tamilnadu
0 5
Serenity in Sethumadai, Tamil Nadu, is designed by Bangalore-based Ma+rs to temper a creative retreat in the wilderness using natural materials and passive cooling techniques topped by thatched pyramidal forms reflecting the mountainous backdrop while serving as an integral feature for heat regulation. The patch was adapted from a wildlife corridor into an observatory by merging half the site with the forest to form a natural crossing and blurring the boundary between the ‘wild’ and the ‘built’. The project carefully toes the distinction between thoughtful restraint and complete isolation. Serenity / Ma+rs ______________________________________________ Firm : Ma+rs @maplusrs Lead Architects: Anisha Menon, Sabyasachi Routray Location : Sethumadai, Tamil Nadu, India Landscape: Oikos Ecological Solutions Photography : Studio f/8 @studio.f8_ Nestled within a forested site near Sethumadai, Serenity is conceived as a wildlife retreat that quietly integrates with its ecological surroundings. Defined by a cluster of thatched roofs, the architecture takes cues from the silhouette of the distant Anamalai mountain range, allowing the built form to sit gently within the landscape. Designed as part of a broader initiative to establish a wildlife corridor, the retreat prioritises coexistence with nature, dedicating much of the site to the movement of elephants, leopards, and bison. The planning embraces restraint and sensitivity, fostering a seamless relationship between built form and wilderness. Materially rooted and contextually responsive, the retreat offers an immersive spatial experience where architecture becomes an extension of the environment—quietly framing moments of pause, observation, and connection with nature. #architecture #interiordesign #designindia #homedesign #indianarchitects @indian.architects For project submissions: [[email protected]]
