New collection - fundament. A foundation for furniture, and for how it lives in the world.
Fundament is a collection that returns furniture to its essence: material, structure, use, and time.
Not conceived as objects alone, but as volumes within space, defined by line, mass, and presence.
At its core, Fundament is about furniture being furniture.
Reduced to what is necessary, yet carrying weight, emotion, and permanence. Now online.
Meet Arno Declercq
Belgian designer Arno Declercq grew up immersed in beauty and craft — shaped early by his father's passion for tribal artifacts from West Africa: objects never made as art, but as ritual tools defined by function, mystery, and meaning.
That foundation runs through everything he creates. His pieces are functional sculptures meant to live — furniture that breathes through material, with forms that feel both ancient and immediate. Wood and steel are central to his process; through burning, brushing, and patination, surfaces are not refined but revealed. Imperfections are controlled, creating a tension between rawness and precision.
The work sits between reduction and weight — clear without being minimal, strong without appearing heavy. Informed by architectural thinking and early 20th-century movements, each piece is understood as a structural presence within space. All work is produced by hand in the atelier, built to endure — its value unfolding quietly through use, aging, and time.
Opening on May 15, The Rope | Gallery presents Avant-Brutalism, an exhibition that brings together a complete expression of Arno Declercq´s universe, unfolding as a coherent environment rather than a sequence of individual pieces. Spanning both previously released works and new developments from the Fundament collection, the presentation traces the continuity of a practice grounded in structure, material, and time.

The Fundament Chaise Longue carries the quiet intimacy of the historical love chair, a piece once conceived for closeness, conversation and presence. Reinterpreted through the language of Fundament, it becomes a sculptural volume reduced to structure, comfort and material. Furniture at its essence, shaped for the way we live and gather today.

Metal has long been part of the studio’s language.
Patinated and burned steel have been present throughout earlier collections, not as finishes, but as signature treatments. They carry time, depth, and a certain stillness, surfaces that evolve rather than remain fixed.
With Fundament, this material is taken further. picture by @victor_robyn

Each piece is designed to be used daily, to support, to carry, to endure.
Open editions allow for full customization, developed in close collaboration with architects and clients, adapting to each context while maintaining a clear structural identity.
Rather than being defined by narrative or rarity, the value of each piece emerges over time, through use, through presence, through continuity.
A collection not created for the moment, but with the intention to become vintage for the next generation.
