Coral Gardens x Maldives
Love to see the inspiring work being done out on the reef here at Fulhadhoo. 🪸
Due to environmental issues surrounding their main port, many corals were sadly lost in the vicinity.
Coral reefs provide an important ecosystem for life underwater, protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves hitting the coast, and provide a crucial source of income for millions of people.
Where is your favourite reef? Comment below so that I can pay it a visit! 👇🏼🪸💙

@rrreefs Tails from the Pujada Bay reef 🐠🐟🐡
Todays clip from @streamocean shows what happens when a hungry visitor descends on the reef.
The fish scatter, a squid expels its ink and the reef is momentarily deserted, all this chaos is created by an unidentified predator 😱
We want to uncover the identity of this elusive fish and we need your HELP

Tails from the Pujada Bay reef 🐠🐟🐡
Welcome to the underwater paradise of #PujadaBay.
It’s Monday so we had to bring you another video for your viewing pleasure.
Today’s clip from @streamocean features a temple like structure that was purposely built using our nauplius platform to create a large overhang. 🏛️
It’s very important to create overhangs within our reef designs as it gives fish a hiding place from the predators that hunt on the reef as well as providing a shaded area to protect the fish and coral from the sun’s harmful rays.
👀 Can you spot the long finned bannerfish as it swims in and out of the coral? 📹 installer team: the DOrSU

This footage from our camera in Fulhadhoo, Maldives, showcases the bustling activity of countless fish species swimming above and around the reef. The abundance of fish and a diverse community of species are crucial for the health of these underwater ecosystems 🪸
Why is this diversity so important? Fish play key roles in maintaining coral reef balance: from keeping algae in check to contributing to nutrient cycling and supporting coral health. By protecting and preserving this rich biodiversity, we can ensure the resilience and survival of coral reefs for generations to come.

At Stream Ocean, our mission is to provide state-of-the-art Biodiversity analytics, all automatically generated by our AI using video data. Join us as we delve into the essential indices that gauge Biodiversity:
🔍 Species Richness: Unveiling the variety of species within an ecosystem, showcasing its richness and intricacy.
📊 Species Evenness/Abundance: Beyond mere numbers, this metric evaluates the equitable distribution of species, crucial for ecosystem stability.
💡 Species Diversity: A holistic metric combining richness and evenness, offering a deep insight into the balance and variety of ecosystems.
🔄 Jaccard Similarity Index: Our AI computes this metric to compare species sets, revealing similarities and differences in ecosystem compositions.
These metrics are fundamental in biodiversity studies, providing crucial insights into ecosystem health and resilience. We’re eager to hear your thoughts as we continue to refine our analytics, please share any feedback in the comments 🌊📈

Here’s footage from our cameras in Barbuda. Fun Fact! In this video, you can witness a Porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix). This species is very well known for its capability to transform itself into a spiky ball when threatened 🐡
Indeed when the Porcupinefish feel in danger it inflates itself by swallowing water. His spines, which usually lay flat against its body, then stick out and create a defense against potential predators. This Porcupinefish is one of our many visitors in our Barbuda project, follow us if you would like more updates on our projects.

Insights from our latest project in Zanzibar! 🌊
We are thrilled to share more insights from our collaboration with @marinecultures 🖇️ We look forward to witnessing new species and adding colorful videos to our rich library.
In this video, you can see four Yellow-breasted wrasses (Anampses twistii) exploring the coral nursery. With their stunning blue bodies and elongated snouts, the Anampses twistii adds a pop of color to coral reefs!
Did you know these beauties are protogynous hermaphrodites? 🔄 Starting as females, some may later transition to males. Talk about fascinating! But that’s not all – they play a crucial role in reef ecosystems by keeping small invertebrate populations in check.
Let’s protect these vibrant creatures and the reefs they call home! 🌏💙

Meet the Climate-Resilient Coral Champions! 🪸
Last week we mentioned coral species susceptible to climate change. Let’s switch it up for this week and take a deep dive into corals that brave the challenges of climate change better than others. Check out our carousel showcasing some of the most climate-resilient corals.
📍What makes these coral species more resilient?
These coral species stand out in the face of climate change due to their remarkable adaptability. One key factor lies in their genetic diversity, offering a robust range of genes that enable them to adjust to changing environmental conditions.
Additionally, these corals have established harmonious relationships with algae, fostering a symbiotic partnership that contributes to their ability to withstand stress.Thriving in various habitats, they showcase an adeptness at acclimating to fluctuating conditions. Moreover, their efficient calcification processes facilitate the rapid recovery of their skeletons after facing environmental stressors.
Some of these corals also strategically inhabit deeper waters, providing them with a refuge from the more unstable conditions at the surface.
In essence, their resilience is a testament to the intricate ways in which nature adapts to ensure the survival of these vital ecosystems 🩵
