So… we made Bánh Tráng CDs, aka Rice Paper Compact Discs. strangevisuals ủ idea này khá lâu. Trong quá trình sưu tầm bánh tráng, tụi mình nhận ra strangevisuals làm postcard vuông vắn rồi, giờ làm cái gì tròn tròn cho giống bánh tráng cuốn nem? How do we honor the round shape of Vietnamese rice paper? Tụi mình nghĩ về đĩa CDs. Những năm 2000s, PopCap Games, Đế chế, Britney Spears. Cảm giác xỏ tay qua lỗ CD, trượt nó trên khay, nghe tiếng máy chạy trước khi nghe tiếng nhạc. Dòng CDs này in trên 100% bánh tráng. Trong suốt. Viết vẽ bình thường, tránh nước. Thay vì bế keo, đĩa này được cố định bằng đinh đầu tròn và ốc vít. Đường kính 12cm, dày ~0.3cm. Do 6 lớp bánh tráng gộp lại. Mỗi đĩa có một mã QR. Scan để nghe strangevisuals nhé. Những âm thanh này ghi lại từ chuyến đi của tụi mình, những tin nhắn thoại, tiếng tim đập, tiếng hột vịt lộn, bánh đùi gà,… Toàn bộ âm thanh từ các mã QR được upload lên Internet Archive, link in bio. Có thể nghe bất cứ lúc nào. Sau lần này strangevisuals đổi tên sang strangesonics project. We did it! We printed postcards on bánh tráng [Vietnamese rice paper]! Một tối đói bụng, tụi mình order bún đậu về ăn, được tặng xấp bánh tráng. Gắp miếng chả cốm, tụi mình nghĩ là, bánh tráng cũng phẳng phẳng, mỏng mỏng như tờ giấy. Liệu Tráng có như Dó ko nhỉ. Gắp miếng thịt luộc, tụi mình quên nghĩ tiếp. Cuối tuần rồi, trong lúc khâu sách, tụi mình nhớ vài tuần trước ăn bún đậu trên chiếc bàn này. Và xấp bánh tráng còn cất trong tủ. And the rest is history. 9 tấm postcards in trên chất liệu mới. Sydney, we’re calling you. Many new things are coming to @som__space pop-up this weekend: new Bánh Tráng CDs for Trà Vinh, new book for Hà Nội, new spotify codes to our sounds. From April 11-12, we hope to bring a bit of the North, the South, and many places of our shared homeland to you. Strange Visuals Project (@strangevisuals.project ), now at Sớm Space. Founded in Saigon in 2023, Strange Visuals is an independent research project exploring memory as a way of honoring everyday life. Inspired by the tradition of postcards and CDs travelling between people, the project creates small objects designed to be exchanged, kept, and passed along as tokens of friendship and shared experience. The project began with a series of postcards shared online, which gradually grew into physical objects people wanted to hold and exchange. Strange Visuals became known for its postcards, including the Bánh Tráng (Rice Paper) Postcards introduced in early 2025, followed by the Bánh Tráng CDs later that year. These releases marked an important turning point for the project. Much of the project’s inspiration comes from ordinary acts of devotion. A sticky rice seller who remembers your order. Market vendors who feed a neighborhood each morning. These quiet rhythms of everyday life shape the spirit of Strange Visuals. Through travel and observation across Vietnam, the project has also become a reflection on belonging. What began as a study of memory gradually revealed a deeper affection for the country as it exists in everyday moments. Strange Visuals continues from this place of curiosity and care.
