🌟New year, new reads?🌟
Our Strangers Press translated chapbooks are short and pack a punch. Here are a few suggestions from across our different series to get your reading going again:
📚Then Why Ask Me To Come? by Wataya Risa, translated by Yuki Tejima
This story orbits a BBQ gathering taking place during a pandemic lockdown, to which our main protagonist has been reluctantly invited, along with his wife, by his wife’s best female confidante. Unbeknownst to him, he is about to be confronted over something he thought would remain a secret…
📚Taxi Driver by Jurga Tumasonytė, translated by Sasha Wilde
Rasma is a taxi driver with a mysterious past, a mysterious present, an uncertain future, and a complex relationship with a 'double'. We follow her through a series of encounters personal and professional - some troubling, some comic, some profound - as she struggles with her sense of identity and belonging while trying to make ends meet.
📚Cage by Qiu Miaojin, translated by Shengchi Hsu
Boy meets girl when both happen to arrive on the same rooftop, on the same day, to kill themselves. Instead, they chat and make a pact that sees their lives gradually entwine but unravel at the same time...
All available as individual chapbooks through our website!

Still dancing your way into the new year and want some fast reads? 💃🏻🥂🎰
These chapbooks by @strangerspress will have you starting that Storygraph game strong.
The collection called VERZET (translates to ‘resistance’) is the by-product of Manchester-based agency Office of Craig and Strangers Press showcasing the work of eight exciting, new — to the English language — writers from the Netherlands. From award winners and nominees including Jamal Ouarichi, Karin Amatmoekrim, and Sanneke van Hassel, as well as newer voices of English language translations, each of these 8 chapbooks serves to cover everything from modern relationships, horror, queer love to prejudice, multiculturalism, alienation, capitalism and more.
The set comprises of the below:
1 / RECONSTRUCTION (by Karin Amatmoekrim trans. by Sarah Timmer Harvey)
2 / THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US (by Thomas Heerma van Ross trans. by Moshe Gilula)
3 / BERGJE (by Bregje Hofstede trans. by Alice Tetley-Paul)
4 / THE TOURIST BUTCHER (by Jamal Ouariachi trans. by Scott Emblen-Jarrett)
5 / RESIST! IN DEFENCE OF COMMUNISM (by Gustav Peek trans. by Brendan Monaghan)
6 / THE DANDY (by Nina Polak trans. by Emma Rault)
7 / SHELTER (by Sanneke van Hassel trans. by Danny Guinan)
8 / SOMETHING HAS TO HAPPEN (by Maartje Wortle trans. by Jozef van der Voort)

Faves were def The Tourist Butcher (give me a grim comic tale about a serial killer who prepares his victims for a culinary dish) anyday. In this same chapbook, Memories of a Tin Can tells the story of a psych student getting a slice of a brain from her biologist roommate and being obsessed with it. Loved.
Thank You Being With Us was also a great one about a son inviting his estranged father into a live broadcast to discuss the book he’s written about their failed relationship. In this same chapbook a troubled voyeur watches the comings and goings of a massage parlour while contemplating his own life and noting down all his observations that it utterly consumes him.
Each of these chapbooks contain up to 5 short stories so loved the variety and will def be dipping into Dutch literature thanks to this collection. Ty @strangerspress for this set! 🩷
Just finished reading my chapbooks from the Kanata set by @strangerspress 💖
I even made a journal spread on them with my ratings + mini reviews!! ✨
The God of the Word by Machida Kou and Udon by Takayama Haneko were definitely my favourites 🥰
Others in this set are:
Kamachi & Pictures of Her by Takiguchi Yusho
Then Why Ask Me to Come by Wataya Risa
The Three Crabs by Oba Minako
Also wanted to feature how gorgeous these chapbooks are: from the covers to the flaps to the endpapers to the way chapters were designed— everything is a joy to behold 😍
