Stranded Recording Studios

On this day four years ago we opened the doors to the public. . Babitha came in and recorded one of our favourite Australian records, ‘a brighter side of blue’. With wild ideas on the horizon, we look back at that record as defining of what we love to do in the studio. Here’s to many more, and to many more songs & ideas that are in the air ✨

Holy heck. We have crunched the numbers over 20 full length records have been (somewhat) recorded at Stranded over the last four years! Some of these records like Jordan Irelands ‘Spirit Walking’ were just touched by the studio with some EQing at the end of the process while others like @caitlinharnettandtheponyboys was nearly entirely a live record. There has been so many people involved in these records, from writing/recording sessions across some other amazing studios such as @shedsoundlab and @goldenretrieverstudios , all the graphic designers, recording and mastering engineers, all the camera people, photographers and all the great independent record labels such as @dinosaurcityrecords @blossomrotrecords and @lulusmelb @spunkrecs name a few that hve put these records out. Not to mention all the singles and EP’s of so many bands (will post another time).. so grateful to have had the chance for Stranded to be given the chance to work on some of Australia’s most beautiful records. December 2020 - March 2026 @stranded.rec 💐It takes a lot to build a studio, and it takes a lot to pull one down. Thank you to all our amazing friends who helped build the space, to the hundreds of musicians and songwriters who donned a pair of headphones; to those that ever played a show in the warehouse and danced to the late night parties. Also thank you to all the other amazing people we got to share the space with, who also are now finding new places to continue their work. The brewers, painters, leather workers, ceramists, record purveyors, magazine makers and general lovely people to say the least. In due time we’ll let you know what Bowen and I are both up to and where our respective journeys are going. However for now, after about 45 days of straight deconstruction it’s time to have a day off. “I feel like we need to really push it, because there’s so much content out there, and people have really different attention spans. That’s another thing, you as an artist need to be not just good in your music production, but you need to know the market, how the marketing and the market changes all the time, so yeah [laughs] — it’s learning all the time! After an iconic first run with Gero from Indonesia in May, this next Club Laundrette instalment sees Washing Machine DJs going the distance, all night long. Since launching Washing Machine as a free monthly dance party in the Franks Wild Years triangle back in 2022, Catman and Jake have been busy behind the scenes — bringing bonafide legends like DJ Jnett, Rahaan, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), and many others to the Illawarra. Now, for one special night, Washing Machine DJs are digging deep and serving up a night of dance-floor delights from their extensive record collections. Expect everything from balearic bombs and left-field disco anthems to dubbed-out house heaters and cosmic electro mind-benders. In short: expect the unexpected. Music, song, and dance are integral parts of their culture, ceremonies and connection to land. We are deeply grateful to be able to gather here and we pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging. This land was never ceded. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Illawarra songwriter @tom_hummel came into the studio, he got the producers in to moonlight as a drummer and bass player, a 4 track ep over the last 3 days. ‘Peddlin steel T’ got some lines in, while Tom filled in the rest with guitar and the organ

Jonny Devlin known for supporting the Beatles on their Aus/NZ tour Devlin came into the studio to re-record his 1964 hit ‘Tribute to the King’ with his family which is a song comprised of 35 of Elvis’s song titles turned into one big rock song. At age 87 Jonny still rocks

🐋 WINTER WASHING MACHINE 🐋 Okay, time to introduce our next live act for our upcoming winter warmer warehouse party! Welcoming local legends MISSO to our live stage. MISSO began in the summer of ‘22 in a hot garage in East Corrimal, inspired by the beautiful coastline and sweeping escarpment of their home town on Dharawal country. Blending 90s dream pop, psych, surf, and indie rock, their songs encapsulate a youthful optimism in the growing pains of their lives. With driving basslines and jangly guitar tones, MISSO are an act not to be missed. We were looking for the perfect live act to set the vibe early and warm things up nicely and having had the pleasure of seeing them live many times Misso really know how to bring things to a boil and season to taste. Fast, fun, frenetic, they’ll get things cooking on all burners.
