Ever wonder how breweries come up with tasting notes for beers? Here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse of industry professionals displaying mastery of their craft. Come try our new Single Hop Pale Ale: Comet and tell us your tasting notes.
All seriousness aside, we're really excited about this new beer. It's the first in a series of single-hop pale ales we're brewing this year, featuring hops from Billy Goat Hop Farm in Montrose (the last hop farm in Colorado). Hops exhibit a high degree of terroir and Colorado hops can express themselves very differently than the same varieties grown in Oregon or Washington.
This first beer showcases Comet, a variety released in 1974 that almost disappeared because lager breweries at that time didn't appreciate what they described as "wild American" notes. It's been making a small comeback and it's a hop we've been using in a lot of our hop forward beers lately. This beer is what we'd refer to as a modern pale ale: light color, dry finish, and a really bright hop expression. The Colorado-grown Comet imparts notes of grapefruit, citrus peel, and light resin.
This beer is brewed with 100% Colorado-grown ingredients: the malt comes from both Troubadour Maltings and Root Shoot Malting, and the hops from Billy Goat Hop Farm.

So here’s a quick story about Train Beer. We’ve always wanted to collab with our good friends at @stodgybrewing because it’s our favorite neighborhood hang and they’ve been friends for a long time. Another long time friend @zacharylallison has run the @bikesportsco fit studio out of Brave’s basement since we first opened in old town. Sometimes when we’re all done working we hang out, share stories, catch up, talk about bikes, the bike biz, riding and old limousines. Zack works hard and almost every time he needs to go home a big ol’ train rolls through and effectively cuts him off from riding west, and yada yada yada, we always thought it would be funny to make a beer called train beer. Cause according to Zack…. “If I wasn’t supposed to be home right now it would just be a regular beer”.
Huge thanks to Tyler and Natalie at Stodgy for making local brews from locally grown ingredients. 100% of train beer was grown and made right here in Colorado and we think this is the way. It’s crispy and bright, and reminds us of how rad our friends are, and how much we love Fort Collins.
Stodgy is officially tapping it on Saturday so join up and celebrate some cold ass weather finally showing up 👐
