"Writers in this country are expected to produce more than just readable books. The idea that a writer is a nation’s conscience has its logic and tradition here. This tradition continues in the totalitarian system and acquires a special flavour. The written word acquires some extra ‘radioactivity’. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be locking us up for it." -VÁCLAV HAVEL Havel's "Protest"! Coming soon to a living room near you! And this time around it begins in... Pittsburgh! June 4th - 7th! An army is only as effective as its commander-in-chief. And this army of Schubs, this army of love, is led by the best there ever was: Kirsten Kollender Schub. Our lives are blessed by you.

What do Phil Ochs, Dee Dee Ramone, Avraham 'Yair' Stern, Hillel Kook (aka Peter Bergson), Billy the Kid, King Solomon and Satan all have in common? One man played them all on stage or screen: /reel

Just one year ago, the world lost the wisest, wittiest, toughest & hardest-working pulmonologist on Earth, and our family lost a father, father-in-law, husband, grandfather, and best friend. His spirit guides me every day. May his light and laughter shine on in perpetuity. Formal (and fun) obituary for Dr. Herbert Michael Schub found here: /us/obituaries/legacyremembers/herbert-schub-obituary-------From 5/6/26: Dr. Herbert Michael Schub passed away peacefully yesterday, in the home he loved. He was my hero in a thousand ways. The smartest, hardest-working, and—as anyone who ever met him would tell you—the funniest man on earth. Born in the Bronx to immigrant parents, he became a legendary pulmonologist, at one point working at three hospitals simultaneously (Oakland, Alameda, and Highland), while also serving as President of one of them, running a private practice, and winning “Teacher of the Year” awards year after year. All the while, he got up at 4 a.m. every day to work out—well into his 80s—ate broccoli and sardines for breakfast, and made everyone in his world laugh. He traveled the world with his beloved wife, Lyn. And memorized all of human history (well before there was ChatGPT, there was Herb Schub.) When he called us two months ago to tell me he had been diagnosed with late-stage, incurable cancer, he said he was at peace, with no fear and no regrets. In fact, he quoted Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech at Yankee Stadium: “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” But he was wrong. I was the luckiest man—to have him as my father. (My sisters Karen and Jenny too, his step-children Nathan and Rebecca, and all of our children-- his twelve grandchildren!) My dad taught me how to live. And now, he has, as a final gift, also taught me how to die--- with pure gratitude for a life well-lived. I only hope to be to my children what he was to me: true north. In Dr. Schub's honor, today, go make someone you love smile.

"We are all responsible for the sad shape our world is in... Let us therefore promise ourselves at this difficult time that we will never again allow human apathy to rule and destroy... Our mission is not to dance to the frivolous beat of an incompetent conductor, but to hold fast to the truth we have found, and dedicate ourselves to the work we have begun." -Václav Havel Our work begins in Pittsburgh on June 4th, 2026 and runs until June 7th. Dissent Lab - The new podcast from the Vaclav Havel Center. Vaclav Havel was a writer, human rights activist, and statesman who led Czechoslovakia’s 1989 Velvet Revolution. As 21st-century governments abandon democracy, people across the world are asking how to move forward. This podcast features conversations with contemporary dissidents who have faced imprisonment, torture, or exile, fighting to free their people from oppression and bring democracy to their homelands, and resisting authoritarianism at great personal cost. These are lessons that can't be learned in a history class. The Vaclav Havel Center presents this unforgettable series.
