Mid-century motel makeovers are trending. 📈 Currently on our radar is the 1962 City Center Motel in Long Beach, California. The DTLA firm Omgivning—which specializes in urban adaptive reuse and mixed-use interiors—oversaw the 26,000-square-foot, 50-room hotel renovation. The parking lot was transformed into a welcoming pedestrian oasis with new landscaping and a restored pool to create an experiential courtyard that invites guests to enjoy the space.

Interior glimpses of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Architect Welton Becket and Associates, 1964. These images are from around 2004, shot on my trusty old 4x5. One of my favorite buildings in Los Angeles, these vignettes were part of a personal series I was doing that looked at ideas of style and finishes in 60’s and 70’s interiors.

A vignette from @studiopeterhamilton and @ryantyniarch ‘s recent project in West Los Angeles. I only got to see the work once it was finished, but during the shoot I got to spend time with both the architect and the homeowner and get a sense of how they worked together through the process. Great to see such a trusting and easy going relationship, and spend the day in the beautiful completed project.

From a recent project for David and his team at @terremoto_landscape . They conceived a landscape that was an extension of their clients ideals, responded to the architects design choices, and created a secret oasis in the middle of downtown Los Angeles.
Hankering for a road trip! I dug up these stills from a 2007 project on landscape, planned housing and urban sprawl. This is a corridor between Los Angeles and Palmdale that I suspect may be encrusted with housing by now. Long before drones were available, I was hanging out if a helicopter for these. 🚁 .

I was trying to do something new but I realize now that I was essentially recreating a 1980’s AAA Tour Book cover from my childhood. My parents were planners, so we’d get those books before every summer road trip to Florida. The images and type treatments on the covers were so well done. Totally iconic.

Artist Diedrick Brackens photographed in his Los Angeles studio earlier this year.
One of the most rewarding projects from the last year was collaborating with Diedrick on the creation of a suite of photographs that accompanied the exhibition of his weavings. Lots of special modifications had to be made during construction to make the project conform to American permitting process, standards, and codes. Hats off to the construction team for accommodating all those demands so seamlessly.
