NEW ON OUR SHELVES⁠ ⁠ Stella Geppert is a sculptor and performer whose experimental work draws on choreography, statuary, body extensions, and graphic notations. Her art is centered around an exploration of the body as a medium and material for communicative processes, the global repercussions of simple actions, energetic physical states, and transgenerational transmissions of behaviors.⁠ ⁠ The publication “CONNECTIVITIES. Handbook for Embodied Communication” is the first to offer comprehensive insight into Stella Geppert’s approach. Essays by contributors with expertise in dance studies (Gabriele Brandstetter), immunology (Michael Meyer-Hermann), and art studies and body techniques (Joana P. R. The physical and embodied generation of signs becomes apparent, for example, in her performatively created drawings, which register the gestural communication of participants as charcoal traces on large-format sheets of paper. If viewing the image thus becomes a retracing of graphic traces, the artist, in her most recent intervention in urban space—where she leaves marks using the cast of a leopard’s paw—invites people to take up the archaic practice of tracking again, setting them in motion and leading them, within the urban jungle, both onto a false trail and the right one. It has been shown that, as a group piece, the work possesses the quality of a procession of resistance and remembrance, as we all share experiences of war within our families and across generations, and are currently living through wars, or fear them. Thus, the “alarm” became central to the series of episodes. With you, the piece also shows how these seemingly insurmountable forces (gentleness, humility, desire, joy, grief, anger, self-destruction, resistance) are stored in their various facets within our breath. And when we breathe life into these emotions, our movements resonate through the harmonica. Through you, the piece also shows that grief can transform into resistance and that sensitivity is no contradiction to an alarming call to action. I am still deeply moved by the invitation, the collaboration and the wonderful film documentation by Augustê Norbutaitê @auggen_ A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed.
