I’m just so so excited to finally be able to start sharing what I’ve been working on for the past year - Nisa! In Maltese, ‘Nisa’ means women and I’ve been on a research and practice journey, falling in love again and again with the women and island I hail from. Each woman in this project is inspired by women I know, have met, have heard of, or events that have taken place within the Maltese daily ritual. All the stories are laced with humour, exploring the wonderful island that will always be home. I’m really excited to announce the launch of my debut photobook, Bodies of Water / Ħallini Nsir il-Baħar at @tenderbooks on Thursday 30th October. Within its’ pages, I reflect on the notion of identity as something residual and ever-shifting - a waveform that shapes, erodes, and reshapes the self. The work which moves between the cinematic and the intimate, muses on themes of femininity, shame, religion, and heritage - how the body holds culture, how identity shifts like the sea and how it ties to the two islands I now hail from. The book is designed by @matthewrolandbannister and features poetry by Maltese poet @grechelizabeth @manachumateatro whose words frame the photographs in a shared language of memory and longing.
