Hello Kitty with fangs? 🎀🦷
On first glance, what appears to be the cute pop icon reveals a nasty grimace in Stefan Rinck’s work: The sculpture GIRLY SECRETS (2025) is part of the “Rabbit Shield-Bearers” group in his current Rotunda project, THE ALPINE CLAN RETURNS
Positioned on the pillars of the Rotunda, shields and masks give these figures a dual identity. From the front, we see rhombus structures, scallop shells, or binary codes that appear like faces. Only when you move around them does it become clear: they are rabbits. Together with their chivalrous colleagues from the Rabbit Guards, they form the clan’s diplomatic honour guard.
Perhaps not the kind of rabbits you’d expect at Easter—but it’s worth a visit. Admission to the Rotunda is free.

Was auf den ersten Blick wie die niedliche Pop-Ikone wirkt, zeigt uns bei Stefan Rinck eine grimmige Grimasse: Die Skulptur GIRLY SECRETS (2025) gehört zur Gruppe der „Hasen-Schildträger“ seines aktuellen Rotundenprojekts DER ALPEN-CLAN KEHRT ZURÜCK
Positioniert an den Pfeilern der Rotunde, verliehen Schilde und Masken diesen Figuren eine doppelte Identität. Von vorne blicken wir auf Rhombenstrukturen, Kammmuscheln oder binäre Codes, die wie Gesichter wirken. Erst im Umrunden wird klar: Es handelt sich um Hasen, die gemeinsam mit ihren ritterlichen Kollegen der Hasen-Garde die diplomatische Ehrenwache des Clans bilden.
Vielleicht nicht die Art von Hasen, die Ihr zu Ostern erwartet – aber ein Besuch lohnt sich. Der Eintritt in die Rotunde ist kostenfrei.

Are these rabbits waiting to get in?
In the Rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne, Stefan Rinck has arranged a queue carved in stone: the „Rabbit Guards“. Sculptures in sandstone and granite stand patiently one behind another – as if waiting to enter the very exhibition they already belong to.
At the entrance, the „Snowrabbit Knight“ greets visitors. Within the ALPINE CLAN, another figure from the group appears in shining Belgian Granite: „Black in Japan“.
Hares have long played a role in art history. From the Middle Ages to Baroque emblems, they were associated with perception and transformation. In Rinck’s installation they appear as shield bearers and an honour guard – and perhaps also as observers of our own museum rituals.
„ALPINE CLAN“ is on view in the Rotunda until 12 April.

Warten diese Hasen auf Einlass?
In der Rotunde der Pinakothek der Moderne hat Stefan Rinck eine Warteschlange aus Stein inszeniert: die „Hasen-Garde“. Skulpturen aus Sandstein und Granit stehen geduldig hintereinander – als warteten sie darauf, die Ausstellung zu betreten, deren Teil sie längst sind.
Am Eingang begrüßt die marmorne Figur „Snowrabbit Knight“ die Besucher:innen. Mitten im ALPEN-CLAN taucht eine weitere Figur der Reihe in glänzendem Belgisch Granit auf: „Black in Japan“.
Hasen spielen in der Kunstgeschichte seit Langem eine besondere Rolle. Vom Mittelalter bis zur barocken Emblematik gelten sie als besonders wahrnehmungsfähig und wandlungsbereit. In Rincks Installation erscheinen sie als Schildträger und Ehrenwache – und vielleicht auch als Beobachter unserer eigenen Museumsrituale.
Der ALPEN-CLAN ist noch bis 12.04. in der Rotunde zu sehen.
Der Eintritt ist kostenfrei.
